USA vs. Poland pente team tournament
Posted: Sep 6, 2007, 7:00 AM

Bonhart recently challenged me to build a team of the 6 best US pente players to a Davis-cup style pente team tournament. This is their roster:

Utratos
Arczi
S3v3n
Bonhart
Gnoza
Elejpidi

A lot of talent in that lineup; gonna be tough to beat. The goal of this topic is to get a team of 5 together who can stand by me to prove USA's superiority over Poland in the greatest board game of all time. Here are a few names i had in mind:

Richardiii
Up2ng
Spifster
Melanie
Samwise (he's canadian--close enough, eh?)
Dmitriking?
Jayhawk?
Scott justice??

Let's get going!

It's no use going back to yesterday, because I was a different person then.

I remember this idea has been proposed quite a long time ago, but seemed to be incredibly hard to bring to life because of some factors, of which the biggest one in my opinion is the timezone problem. Since I've participated in some dsg tournaments I know how hard sometimesit is to set a match between someoone form usa and europe - remember that those were 1v1 games, in poland vs usa match we would have at least 8-10 players to agree on the time of play. Not that I'm not against the idea, I'm actually pretty much in favour of it but I think there should be some bigger discussion over it between people from both sides to see if there's any feedback that would let us hope that the tournament could be played.

I'll make sure the net is the right height, and will provide oranges at half-time.

I'll play, I think I'd be a bit of a weakness right now though... and since aaru's tour is basically going to be the tb version of this, I'm not sure of the point :P

Some others: progambler, bugnone, excel, snut, and a few others I'm sure. Another problem is that many of these players just don't play very much any more. At least not at DSG...

I would be interested. But I am very rusty. My recent results sgainst top players have not been good. I only play once every few months.

Okay, a question we kinda discussed in the main room the other night.. what's the format for this thing? Swiss? Single Match by seed? And can we make this an official tournament on here so afterwards we can find these games easily?

I think a full round robin of matches against each player of the opposite team makes the most sense in this type of 6 vs 6 event. So, everyone would play 6 matches. A match should be at least a set, maybe two.

Of course, this format is not supported here that I know of. It's not really a true round robin, not really swiss. Plus, I doubt a tournament signup page can be limited to a specific set of 12 players, but who knows...

The other tricky thing will be the timezone issue. We'll probably have to agree on a general time frame for a start time, such as 12 midnight DSG time for example -- which means the folks from Poland would have to be early risers...
