Kid Accounts

What is a kid account?
A kid account is a normal Pente.org account that is managed by a parent account. A kid can play anyone, in live and turn-based games, rated or unrated. What is limited is text: chat and messages only go between a kid and the players the parent approved. A kid cannot change its own password or email, the parent manages both. Other players cannot see that an account is a kid account.

How do I create a kid account?
You need an account with a verified email address. Go to My Profile and click the My Kids tab (pente.org/gameServer/myprofile/kids), or use Settings > Kid accounts in the apps. You can either add a new kid: choose a name (5-10 letters, numbers or underscore) and a password (5-16 letters, numbers or underscore), or convert an existing account: enter its name and we email that account's address a confirmation link, valid for 7 days. Nothing changes until the owner opens the link and confirms. A new kid account uses your email address, and we email you the kid's name and password. A kid account cannot manage kids of its own, and an account that is a kid or has kids cannot be converted. If no confirmation email arrives, the account may not be eligible for conversion (for example it is already a kid, has kids, or is a staff or computer account).

Who can a kid account chat and send messages to?
Only the players on the kid's approved list. Its parent and Pente.org admins are always allowed, and so are automatic server notices such as game results. This works both ways: a kid also does not see chat from players who are not approved, and in the game room those lines are simply not shown. Private messages to a kid from someone not approved are refused with "Player is ignoring your messages." Kids cannot broadcast to followers. Kids can still block players. Games themselves are not restricted.

What can a parent see and control?
On the My Kids page a parent can set the kid's password, add or remove approved players (by exact username), and open the kid's active turn-based games read-only, including the messages. The parent can also turn on emailed copies, all off by default: private messages (one email per message), live game room chat (one email when the kid leaves the room, best effort), and turn-based game messages (one email per game when it ends). Copies go only to the parent's registered email. Parents cannot read the kid's private message inbox on the site, and cannot spectate private live games. Removing a player from the approved list does not hide messages already sent. If a kid uses Forgot Password, the email goes to the parent.

How do I release a kid account?
On the My Kids page click Release next to the kid and confirm. The account becomes a normal account and keeps its name, rating and games. Its approved list and copy settings are deleted, and you no longer manage it. A kid account that was created new still has your email address and its last password, so the new owner should change both in My Profile after the release. Only the parent can release a kid account, a kid cannot do it.
