A difference between Ninuki renju and Boat Pente wedge lines
Posted: May 8, 2019, 7:26 PM

Here's an old ninuki renju game I played against zemlyak AKA vbarykin AKA lanser transcribed onto a Boat Pente board. The original game is located at http://www.gamerz.net/pbmserv/Ninuki/Ninuki.php?archive-813

That pesky overline doesn't win rule...

Oh man, the boat rule is ludicrous already, I could never play without overlines. Egads.

It's no use going back to yesterday, because I was a different person then.

btw, there are two main variations of Gomoku
(1) Free-style Gomoku: five (or more) stones in a row win and
(2) Standard Gomoku, which requires exactly five stones for a win.

Why not to implement "Standard Pente" and "Standard Boat Pente" here?

We'd need to decide among 3 or 4 different options on overlines (or implement them all) -
Overlines lose for both players as Edward Lasker said to play Ni Nuki in his 1945 book
Overlines lose for the first player (as in renju) but are neutral or winning for the second player
Overlines are neutral but non winning as with the ninuki renju rules listed on PBeM

The middle one would likely be the most equalizing of the P1 advantage, but no doubt the others would be playable variants too.

The most common rule -- overlines are neutral for both players.
See, for example, Wikipedia:

Seems like a reasonable way to choose, but it's not necessarily the one which creates the most interesting or fairest variant.
