Pente Strategy for Beginners

Hi,
Alexander Nosovsky is writing a book on Japanese Games (five-in-a-row games). I have helped him translate the chapter on Pente into English (I don't know Russian, I just helped fix his English). He will have it available on his website, but until then you can download it from my website: http://users.erols.com/msmammel/marksfiv.html
It is in Rich Text Format (.rtf) which can be read by most wordprocessing programs. The file is zipped (.zip). Let me know if these formats are not good for you and I can convert it.
The chapter on Pente is a very good discussion of the threats you can make in Pente. It is a great way for a beginner to learn strategy and also good for the more advanced player to review and try to find the best move in some situations. It is interesting to read Pente strategy from the point of view of a Renju player using Japanese terminology.
So go download and read it!

Yikes, that is a good one. I get in trouble for spending too much time on the computer (98% Pente) plenty of times ;(

How about some non-proprietary format like ACSII or HTML for those of us who aren't a slave to the Evil Empire.
