Pente presentation help
Posted: Feb 11, 2008, 4:32 AM

I'm in a college level professional communications class. The next presentation is a group project and the topic is games. It is a 15 minute presentation using PowerPoint.
One person in our group thought of doing Pente so that's what we chose. I had never heard of this game before last week. So I'm trying to learn the game and learn as much about it as possible. Our presentation is on February 19.
Does anyone know any good websites or just know the following info: the history of Pente, rules, variations of the game, strategy, or anything else that one would need to know if learning the game and learning about the game.
Thank you for any help you can provide.

Dear fish85
Lots of different sites about pente. Google (about pente) will give you the history, Mark mammel(mark's Five in row games) has a site that will give you the current champions since it originated back in the late 70s. There are 3 books on the subject from the early 80s as well. Some other sites to learn the game as well. Brainking, IYT, Kurnik, and Pente.net I believe most of these sites will be listed at Pente.Homestead.com. The tutorials here should help alot. If I can help in other ways such as giving you a list of most of the great players over the last 6 years give me a shout. Jayhawklov

My part of the presentation is on the history of Pente. So far I've got that Gary Gabrel based Pente on Go-Moku which is a variation of Go. Go is from China, invented 4,000 years ago.
I looked up where Gomoku was created and I got one website saying it was created in China and a different site said Japan.
Anyone know which location is the correct one?

Gary Gabrel did not base pente off of gomoku, although they are somewhat similar. Pente is a simplification of the Japanese game of ninuki-renju. ninuki has the same principles, but more restrictions on moves and capture rules. Gabrel removed some of the restrictions and tweaked the other rules to create pente.
