Hi, I started playing Pente just a month or two ago, and have become addicted. And I found out about this club just today. I've noticed I've found myself in a similar situation in quite a few games lately, and I'm not sure the best way to proceed. I took a snapshot from an old game for you to see. See http://mikemiller.net/pente_board.gif
The stone outlined in red is the center point (0). I am black. It's my move. Where should I play from here? I seem to get to this point a lot and then blow it. I need some gentle guidance from the gurus here. The answer very well may be that my strategy (or lack thereof) up to this point has been faulty and that I've played myself into a corner, but if not I'd like to know the best next move.
What would you do?
Thanks,
-Mike

Hi Mike, welcome to Pente
I checked that it is not a current ItsYourTurn tournament game so we are free to answer you It is good to mention how many captures have been made in the position, I'll assume none here.
It is not an easy position but I would think that moving to R3D1 from the center red square would put you in good position - you prevent white from moving there forming a four and you are making a three, keeping the initiative.
Do other people see a defense against that move or see a better move?

No, I don't feel nearly confident enough to play in a tournament yet. I've lost many more games than I've won so far...

Correct, neither player has made any captures yet at this point.

R3D1 gives me a three? I guess you mean a split three and not an open three.

What happens after the other guy plays R3D3, not only challenging a pair but threatening to reopen that stretch three? This position looks tough to me. Mike, is this game still on your profile at IYT? I would like to see how this position came about because it looks like you had the offense for quite a while but, as you say, played yourself into a corner.

Hmmm, replied to this message earlier today, but I guess it got lost in the shuffle somehow...

Well actually I wanted to wait until that game was fully completed before I posted on this any further so I didn't give the appearance of impropriety. See the following:
(I assume this link will work) I did in fact make my next move at R3D1, but I'm not sure it really worked to my advantage. I did end up winning the game, but only by accident.
If anyone can look at how I got there and point out any obvious errors, it would be appreciated.
Thanks!

It seems for me that your last move was red square. So that is true, then best move in that position without 0 (red square) is R1D1 from red square. cheers, Istvan Virag

Right. I edited this image with xpaint and drew in a red square by hand. I didn't realize a red square at ITY signified your last move. I should have used another color.
Thanks,
