Re: Question on where to play my second

After 1. O, U1 2. L4: This opening seems tough for player two. Quickly looking at my opening book and Oleg's database: L2U1 is common but after 3. L2U2, L1U1 4. L3U1, L1U3 5. L1 it looks good for player one. I see L2D1 a lot but a good response is 3. L2U2, L4U1 4. R1U2. I have liked L2U3 but have gotten stuffed with 3. L1U2. Another common move is R2D1 but it looks like either L2U2 or L2D2 puts player one in good shape. Some less tried moves which could be explored more are R1U2 or even D1. What other ideas do people have? MM

I have always thought L4 was a mistake in response to player two's U1. 1.)0,U1 2.)L4,L2U1 leaves player two in position for keystone attacks all over the board. Mark brings up one very plausible line, but I have to differ with his analysis of it. After 3.)L2U2,L1U1 4.)L3U1,L1U3 5.)L1, it does not look good for player one at all. Player two just responds with 5.)...R2U1, forcing player one to block at 6.)R1U1. Second player attacks the keystone at 6.)...R2U2! I don't see player one ever regaining the initiative from this position.
Thus, I maintain that 2.)L4 is a mistake for player one. A much stronger reponse to 1.)...U1 is 2.)L3.

I don't agree, in PBEM game 3827 Don Banks beat you from that position. With 7. L4, L1D1* 8. R1U1 I think it looks good for player 1. Can you find a way to beat it?

I assume you meant 7. L3 because L4 already has a stone on it in this position. And in that case, no, I can't beat it. Ok, what about this line:
>White's response that jumps out at me is 7.) R1! Apparently I agree, I see I beat Ingus in PBEM #2531 with 7) R1, R2 8) U2
From there I don't see a way to stop player one, anybody have a plan?
Black BLEEDS pairs in this scenario--nothing good can come of that. Ok, Mark. You've convinced me on this one. Anybody else? I've seen Joe as Black in this line play 1.)0, U1 2.)L4, L1?! I'm not sure what to think about that. I'm also wondering if White's V on the third move is enough to sustain itself if Black tries to make another building move on the third move rather than going straight to the open three. What happens, for instance, if Black goes 1.)0, U1 2.)L4, L2U1, 3.)L2U2, L1U3? Does the game go ahead and transpose into what we've been analyzing? It doesn't seem so. It seems that, regardless of White's next move, Black is going to have time to build yet again on the next move with either 4.)...L3U3 or 4.)...R1U3. Thoughts?
And by the way, when I ask if anyone has thoughts, that is also my sideways way of asking if anyone besides Mark is following all this. I enjoy kicking this stuff back and forth, but if Mark and I are simply on our own little rabbit trail, we can do it by e-mail. So, does anyone follow?

No comments yet, but I appreciate the info for going over later as I know next to nothing about openings. Mark M, I would be interested in seeing or procuring a copy of your opening book as well as finding Oleg's data base. I downloaded Stepanov's database once but never figured out how to open it. I'm not sure if I've ever happened on to your pente site before, but would appreciate the url. Thanx ;=}

3.)L2U2,L1U1 4.)L3U1,L1U3 5.)L1, R2U1, 6.)R1U1 R2U2! This continuation good for white. In some moves black will have nothing: 7 L3, L1D1 8 U1R1 L2 White will get 3 pairs... and good game
