What is this Pente Addiction League?
Posted: Aug 6, 2003, 11:23 PM

League Purpose and Description:
The Pente Addiction Speed League was created to provide a fun, exciting change of pace for established players who are looking for something new and interesting to try. We are always encouraging new players to join in on the fun -- the more the merrier!

First of all, please do not think of joining this league as any kind of complex or daunting commitment. It is quite simple and meant to be informal and fun (and FREE!). The league helps keep us all organized, and provides a convenient way to create and administer speed tournaments.

Hopefully, a welcome side effect of this league will be to draw more folks into playing more real time pente here at www.pente.org. So if you enjoy the league or enjoy this site, please, spread the word!!!!
The Pente Addiction Ladder League has its own site -- http://www.myleague.com/penteaddiction -- where all members of the league must register to participate in ladder matches and speed tournaments. Once registered, members are free to play ladder matches against other registered members or to join the speed tournaments --
all of which are played at http://www.pente.org

The league is organized into a ladder format, and all members are ranked within the ladder, similar to how professional tennis players are continuously ranked throughout the year. The ultimate goal is to work your way through the ranks and eventually knock the king off the mountain and become top dog -- the #1 ranked player! To do this, players may challenge other players to a ladder match (either via email or simply when folks are online at the same time). To win a ladder match, players play "sets" of pente games until one player wins a set. A set consists of two games, one as player 1 and one as player 2 -- to win the set a player must win both games in that set. The players may agree to any time settings before the match -- thus far, the "standard" speed game settings are 1minute games with 5second incremental time per
move and the regular pente games are 20 minutes. By convention, the loser of the match reports the results at the league site, and rankings are adjusted within the ladder accordingly.

One of the other exciting perks to joining the league is being able to join and play in speed tournaments! Just find out when a tournament will be held, either via word of mouth or by checking the schedule on the league site, and show up to http://www.pente.org a few minutes before the tournament starts and join in! League members sign up to play in the tournament at the league site, and the tournament is organized and administered by the tournament director. This is a great opportunity to
improve that ladder ranking AND if you finish well enough in the tournament you can win special bonus points called LadderBux! These points can be reimbursed at the league site for cool prizes!

So come on! Join the fun! Bring all your friends!!!

How to Join the League:
*************************** IMPORTANT ***************************************************
Many folks feel a bit reluctant to "ruin" their rating by playing speed games.
FEAR NOT!
According to the rules at DSG, it is perfectly acceptable to create more than one account -- for example, keep one account
for standard length games and a separate account to play speed games -- and this is exactly what we suggest you do! It has
become common amongst league members to create a new account that clearly identifies you as the same individual as your
original account, and also shows that you play speed games. For example, up2ng = speedup2ng, mike321 = qwikmike, partica =
spartica.
************************************************************************************************
So, once you've created a new account to play speed with at DSG:

1. Go to the league site located at http://www.myleague.com/penteaddiction
2. Find the heading “Start Here” in the LEFT navigation frame.
3. You will see several links:
a. Free Signup - this leads to the easy step-by-step registration process
b. Rules - these are the rules that govern the ladder league
c. Instructions - these are general instructions on getting started in a league
It is strongly suggested you read the "RULES" and become familiar with all the concepts before clicking "FREE SIGNUP".
(At any time, refer to at http://www.myleague.com/faq to help answer any additional questions you may have)

Step-By-Step Signup Instructions
1. Go to the league site http://www.myleague.com/penteaddiction
2. Click the "Free Signup" link in the LEFT navigation menu
3. Enter your speed ID and a password and click Continue
4. Enter your email address and click Continue.
5. Check or Uncheck all the boxes (if desired) and click Continue.
6. At this point, the league site sends you an email with an account activation code.
7. Check your email at this time and retrieve your activation code.
8. Finally, enter this activation code and agree to the rules and click Complete.

TA DA! Just like that you are now a member of the league!

Note: You can register your regular DSG nick at the league site too. But you may only have one regular and one speed nick at the league site otherwise they think you are trying to cheat.

Ladder Match:
Now, to get started playing ladder matches, just start playing matches against other league members. Ask them if they would like to play a ladder match. All ladder matches must be agreed to by both parties before they take place. MAKE SURE you use the same account ID as the one that exists and is registered at the league site!!!!!

Before starting the match, agree with your opponent what time settings will be used, whether or not to play "rated" at DSG (of course it WILL count as a league match at the league site, but it's not required to play those games rated within DSG).
Also, be SURE to discuss and agree on an UNDO policy BEFORE the match begins. Since speed games are generally played much faster than standard games, the logistics of requesting and granting undos is often a bit trickier than in standard games. A common league convention is "ok, I'll grant an undo if asked for immediately and before I've played my next move -- once I play my next move I will not go “back".

After every game in the match, make a quick statement about the score, such as "set #1, 1-0 winningplayer OR set #3 3-3", in order to keep track of the match. Be sure to switch seats after every game and continue playing sets of games until the match is won decisively (one person wins both games in a set). Remember, ALL these games constitute ONE ladder match.
THE LOSER of the ladder match has the responsibility to report the result of the match to the league site:
1. Go to the league site -- http://www.myleague.com/penteaddiction
2. Find “The Ladder” in the LEFT navigation frame
3. Click “Report Loss”
4. Log in with your speed ID, if necessary.
5. Enter your opponents name where appropriate (hence the SAME ID at DSG!).
6. In the Comment section, list the score of the match -- 2-0 sets – and a brief comment

Speed Tournament:
You can find out when the tournaments will be via word of mouth or through the tournament schedule at the league site. Presently, the "standard" times that tournaments are held are every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday at 10:30 EST. REMEMBER TO USE THE SAME ID AT THE LEAGUE SITE AND AT DSG WHEN ENTERING TOURNAMENTS!

If a tournament is being organized, a Tournament Director(TD) will be logged on at DSG prior to start time. This person will help you with any questions you may have. The director will announce a "Jump Number", which you will need in order to sign up for the tournament at the league site.

To Enter the Speed Tournament:
1. Go to the league site -- http://www.myleague.com/penteaddiction
2. Find the “Tourney Jump” section located at the TOP LEFT CORNER
3. Enter the "Jump Number"
4. Enter your speed ID
5. Enter your password
6. Click the “I agree to the rules” check box
7. Click Register

This should register you in the tournament and take you to the tournament page where you can see who all is registered, the standings, and rules.

If for some reason you did not get registered using the “Tourney Jump”, click the "Register" link located at the top of this page and register. If the Tournament Director has already opened the "Check In" process, you will be automatically checked in when you register. Otherwise, when “check-in” is opened by the director, click "Check In" and check in for the tournament.

Once the director closes the check in and registration process, click the "Standings" link (may have to Refresh first) to view the tournament match-ups. When the director announces the matchups, find your opponent, meet at a table, and play the tournament match.

For each tournament, there will be REQUIRED settings, such as the time settings, which must be adhered to during each match. When the match is complete, instead of reporting the match as you would for a league match, simply report the result to the Tournament Director in the lobby at DSG -- the director will let you know if any more action is required from you. Enjoy yourself and have fun, that is what speed tournaments are all about!!!
