novelty moves defined
Posted: Nov 20, 2010, 12:16 AM

i was thinking about novelties, i realize this is not new information to master players, but its not a topic ive seen a focus on exactly.

ill add more at some point, but ill start with 3 types of novelties defined.

exploit of a P1 error

1- a new P2 move that exploits a flaw of a P1 line that was thought to be winning. one of the P1 moves was actually an error but was always getting away with a win, and now the new P2 move to exploit it has been discovered forever destroying that path for P1.

tempting P1 into error

2- a new P2 move that is not winning, but might be a tricky move or trap that white can beat although the correct way might not be intuitive. also it can just be a new P2 move that is easy to defeat.

Pushing P1 to make novelty, thus inviting P2's new novelty on the fly.

3- basically the same as #2, here P1 has lost a P1 in a previous game, seemingly or actually to definition #1, and now P2 repeats same line. P1 must deviate before the error occurs. so P1 deviates into a new line, thus offering P2 a brand new tactical position to create a new novelty move on the fly. if P2 is lucky it can find a definition #1 here. if not then P2 will make a definition #2 novelty.

these 3 different ways are important to understand when plotting on players.

in addition, the correct usage of novelty is meaning new move to the world. a move that has never been played in a game before by any one. and generally P2 is the novelty maker. but a new P1 move can also be considered a novelty move, technically speaking.

but some players might use it loosely and mean new move for opponent. meaning, its been done before, but this player hasn't faced it yet, and possibly didn't see it in the data base or another pente site yet. thus having the same effect as a new to the world move.
this generally only works in live rated play. turn based it can happen too, but it happens less becuase of the pente.org data base being viewable during turn based play. where as in live rated play the data base is blocked.

this loose usage might be better named "island novelty" or isolated novelty or illusion novelty or what ever you like..

where the player is a island isolated from the awareness of known moves in the world, thus creating the illusion of it being new.
