what makes for an aesthetically pleasing game of pente?
Posted: Mar 4, 2019, 11:28 PM

I've searched the forums but I've not found any sustained discussions about what makes for an aesthetically pleasing game of pente, either as an observer or as a player...as those might be different.

Some possibilities are...

Best play on both sides
Uses most efficient path to the win
Elaborate forced sequences
Effective traps
Effective psychological traps
Innovations
Visual patterns

Thoughts?

No mistakes on either side, and ends with a race to 5 captures (otherwise the game is usually over 8 moves before the end and we just watch one side suffer). Those are my only criteria.

It's no use going back to yesterday, because I was a different person then.

Thanks for that. Do you have an example game we could see?

I don't know whether or not Karlw will agree on this, but to me this is an example of an aesthetically pleasing game of Pente based on his criteria. P1 does make a late game error, but at the time I believe this line was novel and it is an extremely tough line (my opinion).

Watch the aesthetically pleasing pattern develop with effective forced moves. the last move kinda ruins the pattern, but I thought it was cool to look at. Besides I won the game.

Well, I did lose that game...BUT...werdwc and I made a prettier pattern (IMHO) in a game I managed to win...

impressive live game borrowed from madmike's test thread. P2's 15th is stellar. Reminds me of an old thread on when one can ignore a tria. I'll see if I can find that thread later. These sorts of games and moves I find aesthetically pleasing.

Here are a couple more aesthetic (in my mind sexy) games:

This game only appears unfinished, but with correct play is a sure win for P2. Note the threats on the O line including the possibility of a cork popping on top and how 18. M14 prevents that but 18. ... M13 delivers the coup de grace and solve the ending move sequence here to see just how special and unforeseen this whole ending sequence is.

Here's the ignore an open three while not losing the game thread I mentioned earlier:
https://pente.org/gameServer/forums/thread.jspa?forumID=27&threadID=4310&tstart=-48

And a game I find very errr.. aesthetic... from it -

After sjustice's 15. G9, Kras can safely ignore the open three- either by extending as he does to threaten a potential keystone pair or alternately (I believe) by going directly to L7 threatening two caps if J7 is chosen...
