Pente Alternate Rule Option
Posted: Feb 11, 2009, 8:40 PM

This request is obviously for Dweebo, since only he could implement it.

Pente.net offers an option called the "FIVE-IN-A-ROW RULES". As stated on their site, "The first player may start anywhere on the board. Using these rules, pairs may be captured, but they don't count towards a win. A player wins only by placing five or more stones in a row."

I really enjoy playing this variation. Often the board will fill up with stones, making full use of the Go sized board. Yet with the ability to capture, it still leaves already filled areas very playable.

I was actually taught Pente with these rules a couple of decades ago and had to get use to the captures win later.

I don't think this would be hard to implement since you would simply have to remove the logical argument where five pairs of captures equals a win.

Not sure what you would call it. Also, not sure if Mammel's AI could be adapted for it. But I do think that it is just as worthy a variant of Pente as the others offered at this site.

By the silence, should I take it that Dweebo is busy implementing this option? Possibly just considering it?

Does anyone else care about this or just me?

hello,..not to speak for dweebo, but i will lol.

i know that he is too busy for this at the moment along with a loooong to do list he has that he wont be able to start on till at least the end of the summer. i dont think its a personal thing about your proposal. its a time issue for him. if only we could clone him lol. a dweebo clone dedicated to pente.org scripting would be great!!!

hes working like 3 programming jobs i think, and has a family to be with,..pente.org is not his bread n butter. its a hobby. and he has little time for hobby projects at the moment. if i am wrong about this im sure he will correct me.

i like that as a variation, thanks for the tip!

i don't understand mmamel's ai code at all. i know it could be extended because he has written other AI's for similar games (renju for example). but i don't think he is very active in pente anymore so not sure he'd be interested in coding it up.

if i ever have time i might add this variation.

there has to be a better name for it instead of "five-in-a-row rules"....anyone got any ideas?

does this version come closer to eliminating player 1 advantage? the couple of times i have played there wasn't a "pro" version and would that make a difference in how the game is played?

I'm good with any of these suggestions.

I was racking my brain for a name and only came up with CoDeC Pente. Sucks, I know - so please don't use it. The CDC part stands for Captures Don't Count. CoDeC Pente, anyone? Yuck!

Either Pente-X or X-Pente is probably the best choice. Although, doesn't X stand for ten?

WE HAVE D-PENTE, G-PENTE AND NOW LET US HAVE CDC-PENTE. I LIKE THAT CODE BETTER THAN THE OTHERS; ABBREVIATION FOR CAPTURES DON'T COUNT. RINGS A BELL!

That's it! Simple and straight forward. CDC-Pente. I like it. It works. Thanks, Melanie.

I hereby rescind all other suggestions. My vote is for CDC-Pente.
