The invention of Pente
Posted: Aug 24, 2000, 8:58 PM

I fairly new in the pente community (my user name
elsewhere is Monkey-King), so forgive me if I'm stepping
into a mess with my question/comment.

I'm
wondering what people think of Gary Gabrel as inventor of
pente? It seems to me that, more accurately, he's the a
brander and promoter of Pente, than a true game-inventor.
Ninuki Renju (translates as
two-(pieces)-to-take-away-two-chain-stones) has identical rules to pente and
certainly
predates it.

Ninuki Renju isn't exactly the same as pente,
although it is very similar.

You can read the
rules about ninuki-renju here.
http://www.lemes.se/renju/pente.htm

And you can play it
at my
site!
http://www.pente.org/ on
the test version.

Yeah, you're right they do have some differences.
I couldn't connect to the link you posted, but if I
remember right the main difference is it's illegal in
Ninuki Renju to form two or more triads (including a
stretch 3) in one move. Also, lines of more than 5 don't
don't for a win (acutally, I'm not sure what the pente
rule in this regart is).

I think Gary Gabrel was more of a promoter and
entrepeneur. He made a very slight change to the Asian game,
packaged it in a cool tube with neat beads and a roll-up
board, and pushed it into the night club circuit to
compete with backgammon. He also timed his exit perfectly
with the sell of the game to Parker Brothers. Whether
more creator or promoter, I'm glad he
succeeded.
