New topic about site suggestions!
Posted: Mar 7, 2003, 6:16 PM

I have a couple suggestions I would like to open for discussion. I would like to see the database have another filter option available, one that allows sorting by rated or non-rated. Because this does not affect those who don't care one way or hteo ther, only those who would like this feature need reply. I think it would be useful for statistics purposes (for instance, if I want to see how I have done against Gary, I could do so easily. But the way it is now, I woul have to sort through and filter out the non-rated games, we they are usually experimental [for me anyway] and therefore not relevant to my search).

Second, I would like to see Keryp pente games added to the Database. All the Keryo players out there, speak up if you too wish there to be a Keryo database.

That's it for this post, perhaps a record for shortness from me.

Good ideas, both have feature requests written at http://sf.net/projects/dsg.

I need to speak with Mark about the keryo-pente request, not sure if the current game matching algorithm needs to be modified for keryo or not.

As for the rated filter option, there is one small problem. Many of the games played at DSG are not marked one way or the other (I don't know if they were rated or unrated) because when those games were recorded I wasn't keeping track of that. So the question is whether to mark them all at rated/unrated or "unknown".

But it has been awhile now (probably around a year, I'd need to check) that I've been keeping track of rated/unrated so that is good.

Thanks,
-dweebo

I would love to see Keryo Games in Data Base. I would also suggest that all games not marked either rated or non-rated be treated as non-rated.

THep roblem with this idea is that Dweebo said until a year ago, none of them were marked. This would mean thousands of games, the majority of them, would me marked non-rated, when in fact, most of them were rated (playin non-rated games is really a recent trend, a year ago almost every game was rated). I think it would be better to to just consider all of hte old games as rated.

What a great idea, Dmitri, adding keryo games to the database! I'd love the opportunity to try out the complex keryo configurations...

I think adding keryo pente to the database is a great idea. Something i would surely be interested in.

I want the ability to sort by rating. Being able to specify games with 1800+ player 1 vs 1800+ player 2, for example, would help weed out many games filled with blunders. Obviously, this is not a full-proof way since some of those games are speed games, and we all blunder sometimes no matter our rating. But, it would help in opening analysis.

Along the same thought, using the database like an opening book for chess would be interesting. It would explore all the lines of the "wedge", Boston, Allen's, etc. However, that might make it even harder on P1.

Once again, Scott has a great idea-- I was simply requesting to have a (rated only/ non-rated only/ either) search filter, but What Scott mentioned is even better, being able to sort by setting uper or lower limits for the ratings of the players in the games that come up!

Yeah, I've always wanted to add something like that as well. The same issue exists as with the rated/unrated filter option - I haven't been keeping track of ratings with games forever. So I guess those games would just have to be ignored when filtering on ratings.

I really like the idea of 4 player team pente. It's been forever since i've played that way and with the quality of players and personalities at DSG I think I would enjoy it a great deal. I don't know how hard it would be to program, but i think it could be really fun, and if it were to catch on, a team tourney might be really cool as well.

I havep layed 4 player pente on a real board, and I did think it was an interesting variant, I think it would be nice to see that here at DSG (althouhg I imagine it must be difficult to program).

A good complement to the regular database search would be having my program search the database and find which moves actually lead to wins against best defense (in the database). Currently if you look at a position, you might see a move for P1 that has 90% wins, but if you add that move and search again, you might find that several moves for P2 lose most of the time but one move has 100% wins for P2 (maybe just one game). That winning P2 move is a small percent of the moves made but maybe is the correct move. So my program would show a win for P2 for the move in question instead of 90% wins. It may used a lot of search time, so I'm not sure how well it will be able to run on the server. I'll try to find some time to work on it.

About K-pente in the database, I think our database can correctly handle it if we set the proper flag for K-pente -- I'll look and check my code.

Multiplayer would be great, but might be complex to add.

Keryo-Pente games in Games History
Posted: May 15, 2003, 6:55 PM

I forgot to mention this as one of the new features with release 2.26. Too many features added for me to remember

Keryo-Pente and Gomoku games are now stored in the Games History (formerly known as game database).

Enjoy!
