Pente Poetry

I am taking a creative writing cl@ss this semester and I decided to try my hand at poetry. What better topic than Pente? Here, for your viewing pleasure, is my poem.

The Stones
By Dmitri King

The board gazes up at me, its meaning is unclear--
Do I lay the stone up high, down low, far, or near?
A sea of black and white, a complicated mess;
No answers to be found, nary a single guess.

It plays out in my mind, a series of twists and turns,
Perfection is essential; to err will surely burn.
The clouds begin to part, an epiphany of sorts;
When a counter manifests, for which I’ve no retort.

On and on it goes; one step forward, two steps back,
I vacillate and worry; conviction I do lack.
The stones they stare at me, like hollow empty eyes;
I curse and groan and fuss, but they cannot hear my cries.

It all becomes a blur, lost within my mind,
When suddenly from nowhere, the answer I do find.
So obvious and simple, yet also so complex,
It eluded me but now, no longer am I vexed.

Victory is @ssured, no prospects for defeat,
Yet as I make my move, trepidation do I greet.
Too late I spot a flaw, too blatant to have missed,
But now my bed is made, in my haste I was remiss.

For where I once had four, I now see only three;
A devastating capture, will spell the end for me.
I thought I had it made, open tessera to be sure;
But alas, it is now certain, a crushing loss I shall endure.

If I do not accept a game invite right away, it means I will once I have fewer games in progress.

I had to respond with Pente haiku:

Double Open Three
Split five lurking on the board
Lose again. Screw me.

Isn't it the truth though, when you think you've found the perfect move and won the game! Blammy! You see what you overlooked as soon as the stone is placed! (Didn't know you made mistakes like that, dm!!!!!) It's only a game, right? You've caught what we all feel sometimes, though. A+

DmitriKing -

Outstanding, I loved the poem! Creativity is one of my weak suits so I am always impressed by anyone who is so creative in words, especially when it relates to my favorite game!
