anyone here like PLAYING??
Posted: Jul 12, 2002, 12:58 AM

Hot summer afternoon in the Main Room. Waiting. Alone.
Someone finally shows up.
I say,
"hello?"
- in hopes of a game (and perhaps a friendly chit-chat).
Response:
"What are your ratings?"

AAARRRRRRGGHHHHHHHHH !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is EXACTLY why I stopped playing here.
Talk about "Homo Ludens"... Yeah right.

While on the topic: WHY do we need to face our/our opponents' stats now after every single game?
I think it was perfectly satisfactory to just doubleclick the ID if you were all that interested.
I do believe you guys are ruining the fun.
Please, ease up on point-centered attitude, all we want is to have some fun!
I meet people elsewhere who share my views, can't we just come here for the fun? PLEASE??

If you don't want to see the ratings, you can play unrated games by unchecking the "rated" checkbox in the game room.

If you are taking offence at just being asked your rating, I really think you are being overly sensitive. Some players are recreational only, & others are serious. I don't see why this site can't accomodate both.

At the risk of getting blasted for voicing my opinion, I agree with nomeansno. I don't hang around for the same reason.

I honestly didn't realize that this was an issue for people. I'm glad these fourms are working!

I wish this site had more players on the site at the same time. We could create 2 game rooms, one for beginners and casual players and another for the "serious" players.

Its strange that over time the site has registered over 5,000 users but yet there is hardly ever more than 12 of them on at once. I've been wanting to promote a day where everyone will come out and play, just to see how many people we could get on at once

Either that or reverse the button so you have to make a selection to RATE the game instead having to know what's going on to unrate it. That way beginners who don't know better aren't accidentally caught up in the rating game right off and serious players make a decision to make it count.

ratings after games
Posted: Jul 15, 2002, 9:07 PM

I don't understand the noise about the ratings being sdisplayed after the game ends? what's the big deal? I understand that soem players are more seriousthan others. what I do not understand is why it makes a difference of the ratings show up at the end of the game.

If I do not accept a game invite right away, it means I will once I have fewer games in progress.

In response to nomeans no, I have played close to 1000 games here and I have never had anyone ask what my rating is nor have I asked anyone. I have never seen anyone ask for someone's rating. I don't think anyone cares about other people's ratings when choosing an opponent. Alll of the regular players I know will play anyoen on the site, good rating or bad, it dosn''t matter. The person you encountered sounds likethe exception and not the rule to me.

With all due respect, Dweebo, one that is not obsessed by stats is not necessarily a beginner, and can be quite serious but about playing and not ranking, IMHO..

One of the reasons being that many register a new ID once their rating is too low for their liking... Sad but true.

MANY? I think that might be an overstatement. Yes, some do. but so what? before long it will be the same as it was before.

Let's not get sidetracked with a discussion of multiple monikers, for which there can be many reasons. Maybe you
should have to choose to rate or unrate the game before the game can start. Don't put any designation on the tables, but the game couldn't be started unless the selection had been made. We don't need to get in to people's reasons for playing pente or make anyone feel uncomfortable because they don't want to compete on a tournament status, which is basically what you've got when ratings are not only posted but used in ordering the tournaments themselves.

This type of attitude is highly maddening and frustrating to me and many other people at a great site like this. I should be the one saying AAARRRGGGHHH!!!

Why is it that everytime that Dweebo/Mark/Joe make any attempt to make this site or the tourneys at this site into a place where future world championships can be held that they are GRIPED at by a certain group of players who are just trying to have some fun? Why does seeing your rating after a game cause you to not have fun? Why does a tourney where only 30-40% of the players are seeded cause you to not have fun? Do you feel inferior because you have to play a better player? If you lose in round 1, you'll get a lesser player in round 2, so what's the problem? I know some players who couldn't care less whether they won or lost and just completely ignore the ratings. Why not just ignore them and/or play un-rated games if it bothers you that much.

Because of this attitute, Dweebo/Mark/Joe seed the tourneys like any championship should be and they get backlash. Dweebo shows players ratings after each game so that players know quickly how they are doing and they get backlash. I thought it got kind of old clicking on people's names to see what caliber of player I was playing. What great information this is! It's interesting to see how little you gain after beating a much lower player or how much you gain for beating a higher one. What's especially interesting is to see the wild fluctuations in the ratings of provisional players (less than 20 games).

Frankly, we DON'T want another itsyourturn.com!! They don't rate anything, they randomly seed their tourneys, and adamantly refuse to listen to reason on suggestions for improving their tourney time controls or adding a better Pente variant.

Dweebo and the others are trying to make this into a top caliber site! He like me wants to attract the top players that the world has to offer. But Dweebo also allows players who do not wish to be rated to play unrated games for 'fun'.

Wouldn't it be nice if we could all just have fun and be equal at everything? We could dance in the street, always agree, win half of all of our games at everything, all make the same amount of money, all be equally attractive people, and all be equally good at everyting. Oh, wouldn't life be great? No, it'd be downright boring! The fact is that people aren't equal which is what makes things so interesting. That's what ratings and tourneys are for. Without differences in abilities, there would be no point for either of them.

This topic definitely seems to be creating two camps in the pente community! Lets all try to keep our cool and remember that we're all here to play Pente! I think fybfy said it best with "I don't see why this site can't accomodate both".

Here are some of my responses to various posts.

(fidget)
> Maybe you should have to choose to rate or unrate the

If I made this change I would get TONS of emails and posts from players saying "why do i have to choose whether the game is rated or not....i never had to before...$#@!".

(fidget)
> ... reverse the button so you have to make a selection
> to RATE the game instead having to know what's going on
> to unrate it

I BELIEVE that more players ARE interested in playing rated games than not (again I would get plenty of angry emails for this change). You can never make everyone happy with the defaults all the time. So the best I can do is try to please the majority. As a side note I am planning on adding survey's to the site someday and this would be a good question to ask all the DSG players.

I think you're being awful picky with my wording, I'm sure you understand what I meant about 2 game rooms for different types of players!

(nomeansno)
> One of the reasons being that many register a new ID

I don't think you're in any position to make this statement. You can't say its true, you have no facts to support this other than maybe seeing a few players who have done this. I can't confirm or deny this theory conclusively either, but I can say there are at currently 3286 different valid email addresses for players at the site. And I agree with dmitriking when he says that soon the new ID will have about the same rating anyways. We have discussed people trying to cheat the ratings system before in the big long Tournament #3 discussion in the Tournaments forum, you might want to check it out. Search the Tournament forum for "cheating" and you'll find some discussion about this.

(progambler)

I have to agree with Gary here on his comments about ignoring the ratings if you're not interested in them.

Sure I want to attract top players, but I also want to attract beginner players as well and make them feel comfortable here.

Overall I think this discussion is a good thing for the site and I'm enjoying it! I want everyone to know I value everyone's opinion and will take any question or comment seriously.

You know how to get things stired up nomeansno but they need to be!
Some players come to relax and have some fun and interesting conversation. Others are out to play there best and advance their pente skills to the max. Some like to do both depinding on their mood.
Dweebo said "there are two camps" and he is right...
but I think there is room in the pente world for both.
Could we have a button to turn off the ratings advisory Dweebo???? You like new things to work on anyway.
Would everyone be happy then?????
Na... but happy-er... maybe??????
And... could we have a spell check here at tha forum??

I have just registered here after purching pente like 3 months ago. Noticed internet reversi on my comp and thought hey, i like pente better, wonder if they got an online version. problem with people not being here is that outside of the stoens game community, people think these games are ungodly complex when they are really only as complex as you make them. I know of at least 3 people besides me who would love to here about this site. Already e-mailed one of um, as far as the rating things goes, I'm a swinger casual serious whatever floats yer boat hehe.

I agree with the statement of the double click for.
And i think serious or not you should consider playing everyone for the practice. The more strategies you see the more you can learn and the more intrigueing (typo)
and fun this game becomes. I admit i kinda suck but hey.
You cant get good without playing and everyone out their is concerned with playing people of a certain rating, then your playstyles will become defined and limited allowing someone of the opposing style to waltz in and make lunch out of you as i learned with some of my friends.

The nuances of this game are endless and they can only be fully explored by playing a large variety of people. This is my first day here i know but hopefully many of you agree and we can get back to what this game is meant for, fun AND mental stimulation, one without the other results in uselessness of the game for either.

Not much else i can think to say right now so i guess thats my 2 cents worth.
