Can it affect your rating in regular pente? How do you play it? How is it different? Thanks in advance for the help.

speed does not alter the rules of the game its self. and the element of speed can be added to any of the games available at this site,.. except for turn based games. speed is when you set the clock for 5 minutes or under.
this means that each player will have a total of 5 minutes or under each to make their moves. totaling to 10 minutes for total game if each player uses all seconds available. now there is also a setting called incremental. these are not minutes. these represent seconds. but they are not just additional seconds added.
instead they are a bonus time. what this means is if any time(s) you make a move(s) in 5 seconds or under you will receive a bonus of an additional 5 seconds added to your clock as a reward for moving fast (this is an example of when incremental was set to _/5 ). this if used correctly by both player in a long game can greatly extend the minutes of the game. now however, there is a glitch to this,...if you set for example the time to 5/20 meaning 5 minutes and 20 seconds incremental,...it will say its speed but...it will affect your regular pente rating not your speed rating,..so be careful.

standard speed time professionally is to set the clock to 1/5 in my opinion.

to set the timer for a game to make it speed,..
look to the bottom of the game window,..
click the button that says set timer.
it will open the window to set the speed controls.

i hope this helped.

zoey erred on a few of the technicalities.

Speed pente has the same rules as regular pente, the only difference being it is played with a clock that is fast enough to significantly alter gameplay. You have a separate rating for pente and speed pente, and a win or loss in one does not affect the other.

You have a different rating for speed pente because dweebo reasoned (correctly) that the skills and strategy needed for pente with a short time limit were quite different from those with a more relaxed limit. Whether or not a game is speed depends on the following algorithm:

(Set time) x 4 + (Incremental time) < 23 : speed
(Set time) x 4 + (Incremental time) >= 23 : regular

Where (Set time) is the starting clock, and (Incremental time) is the number of seconds added to your clock after each move. (3/10) would be speed, (3/11) would be regular. The reasoning behind this is the average game lasts about 15 moves, so every incremental second would be about 1/4 minute total added to the clock.

Zoey said you get the bonus if you move fast enough, but I thought you got the bonus every move you make, regardless of how long it took you

From the DSG FAQ page:

Speed Games
All of the above games can be played untimed, with a "normal" time limit, or as Speed games. Speed games are played so differently that they are really in their own category, so at Pente.org they are treated differently. Each player has two ratings for each game, one for normal or untimed games, and one for speed games. This helps the ratings system stay more accurate since each players skills at speed vs. normal games can be very different.
Note: Do not create a separate account for speed games.

So how does Pente.org define a Speed game?
A speed game = (initial time minutes * 60 + incremental time seconds * 15) <= 330
A normal game = (initial time minutes * 60 + incremental time seconds * 15) > 330

Some examples:
Initial time/Incremental time (5/0) = Speed game
5 * 60 + 0 * 15 = 300
Initial time/Incremental time (6/0) = Normal game
6 * 60 + 0 * 15 = 360
Initial time/Incremental time (5/2) = Speed game
5 * 60 + 2 * 15 = 330
Initial time/Incremental time (4/6) = Speed game
4 * 60 + 6 * 15 = 330
Initial time/Incremental time (4/7) = Normal game
4 * 60 + 7 * 15 = 345
Initial time/Incremental time (1/5) = Speed game
1 * 60 + 5 * 15 = 135

When the time controls are updated in a game table, the above formula will be run to determine if the game is a speed game or not, and you will know the type of the game because the game board will display "Speed" if the game is a speed game.

you're right nod, you get the bonus every time you move, and my formulas are just a simplified version of the ones in the FAQ. Divide his equations by 15 and you get mine.

really? lol wow im baffled,.. i allways thought if incremental was 5 then the move needed to be 5 or under seconds to recieve maximum bonus of 5 plus time back with in the 5. well,.. guess when im playing speed im focusing more on my moves than the incremental function lol. thank you guys for clearifying this. i didn't know.
i'll check that out with more attention the next time i play a speed game.
