Looking for multiplayer rules
Posted: Feb 7, 2008, 6:28 PM

I have searched the net for multiplayer rules with no luck except for a few notes about being able to capture mixed sets and some mention about 4-in-a-row winning. My game instructions include some team play rules, but not general. Are various multiplayer rules posted anywhere, or can anyone fill in the gaps?

Thank you

Common Rules
All games are played on a 19x19 board of intersecting lines. Each player places stones on the intersecting lines (not in between the lines). Once a stone is played it can't be moved again (except if captured in certain games). All games start with player 1's first move in the middle of the board. Play then continues by alternating turns until one player wins.

Pente
Pente is like Gomoku but with a twist. You can win at Pente just like in Gomoku, by getting 5 of your stones in a straight continuous line. (Also in Pente you can win by getting more than 5 in a row, unlike Gomoku).

The twist to Pente is that you can capture your opponents stones, removing them from the board. Capturing occurs if you place one of your stones on both sides of a pair of your opponents stones. For example, if the stones are like this XOO and you place your stone so it becomes XOOX, then your opponents stones are removed from the board, leaving X__X. Capturing is good to slow your opponent from getting 5 in a row, but you can also win at Pente by capturing. If you capture 10 or more of your opponents stones you win (5 or more captures).

Another thing to realize is you can't play into a capture. If the board position is like this XO_X, and you place your stone such that the board is like XOOX, then your stones are NOT captured. (Note that Poof-Pente is a variation where you CAN play into captures)

One final rule of Pente is called the "Tournament Rule". If you play rated games at Pente.org, the tournament rule is used. The tournament rule was proposed by Tom Braunlich to make the game more fair for player 2. It restricts player 1's second move so that player 1's second move must be at least 3 intersections away from the center of the board.

I pretty much found all of those rules. My question is about multiplayer rules. Are there official rules for multiplayer games? I have read that either 4-in-a-row wins, and elsewhere that 5-in-a-row wins. Also that you can capture mixed pairs, mixed trios, or only those of the same color. So, what are the "official" rules, or is it just what everybody agrees to at the start of a game?

Thanks

hmm well,..depends on which site perhaps. Over at flyordie.com a 6 in a row doesnt win, but at pente.org a 6 in a row does. that is called a overline rule.
ive never seen a 4 in a row win anywhere, unless your speaking of the game connect4.
Pente is all about getting a 5 in a row or 5 captures essentially, and a 6 in a row and 6 captures should be considered the same when talking about pente, in my opinion. allthough the tourney rule is not enforced in unrated games i feel it should be, but some will disagree.
You can capture multi captures doubles and triples have been known to happen. Theoretically you can capture up to 8 captures (thats 16 stones) in one move, although ive never seen that happen.

you said Also that you can capture mixed pairs, mixed trios, or only those of the same color
i'm not sure what you mean, but if you mean
Xoo_ooX - XooXooX - X__X__X then yes.
if you mean Xoo - XooX - X__X then yes.

if you mean Xooo - XoooX - X___X then no. unless playing keryo which is not regular pente.

if you mean XXo - XXoX - X__X then no.

i'm pretty sure you didnt mean the last 2 examples.

I hope that helped in some way.

in addition heres the link to the official pente rule book.

I was intro'd to the game through some friends at work who were into threesomes and foursomes (not that that really matters here, but I thought I'd mention it ) and the reason you dont see too much in the way of formal play such as this (multiplayer pente that is) is that its basically impossible to control a game even if you command a distinct advantage because play can become slanted when 2 players retaliate/concert their efforts against even the best player. The way the basics go are that yes, you can capture mixed pairs, last man standing wins in a cap war, overlines count and the tournament opening rule doesn't apply to player 1. Thats about all I really recall from those days but it was a kick to play to be sure........hope this helps a bit.....speak up if anything else needs to be answered....

PS Ladbury......4 in a row was nothing more than an audible announcement (Tessera I thinx).....we also extended the same courtesy for Tria as well......other than what I posted yesterday, the regular pente rules applied to the best of my feeble recollection......

Thank you to everyone who posted.

I used to play Pente with a college roommate, and bought an old set on ebay, and some other stone colors from craft stores. I want to teach my kids to play. But the instructions just had standard rules plus team play rules.

I see the new winning moves game comes with 4 sets of stones, so was hoping there would be some "official" rules for multiplayer games.

So, does anyone have official rules included with the game?

Thank you again

The rules for four player team pente are on the page
http://www.winning-moves.com/images/PenteRules.pdf
The rules for three player pente are the same as two player with the addition of mixed pairs captures.
The four in a row win is used in points pente for 3 or 4 players when each player is for himself. You play to a designated number of points (21 is the example given in my set of rules) over a series of games. The player who gets the four in a row gets 10pts. Each player gets 1 point for each capture and 1 point for each three in a row still on the board. Hope this helps.
