Honoring A Great Pente Player
Posted: Jan 17, 2008, 7:15 PM

Let me tell you a story of how I came to play pente again after so many years away from it. I was setting in a house in Fort Worth Tx as we were giving care to an ailing cancer ridden sister. She loved the game of pente and had found her new husband by playing on this wonderful online site called Dweebos. Many a night we would be up all night taking care of her so I decided to check out this site. The first match I saw was Partica and Plasma1 playing and they were having so much fun and there banter was just incredible. I was hooked and every chance I got I was back on playing the game of pente. I was here alot and I kept seeing this name pop up the same time I was there. Night or Day the name dufus was always playing. His rating was soo high that I dared not play him because he would just kill me and my ego would get hurt. Out of the blue one day he invited me to play and thats when I met the most influential person to ever teach the game of pente to me. We spent hours, days, wks and even months playing, as we practiced hundreds of games over and over again. Mostly not rated. I remember I was so addicted that I was on most holidays and he would show and we would practice. Everyone needs a mentor to really get good and he was mine.
He really cared about this game and took it to another level. His unique play was legendary and among the best that has ever played and I will miss him with all of my heart. Mike 321 his brother emailed me and said BoB Bugnone passed away from complications of heart surgury after Christmas. Dam I will miss him and the Pente world has lost another Great player. Bodo if you are looking for someone to kick your *** find my old friend Dufus because hes the best that ive ever seen. Jayhawklov

Very sad to read this. I only played him a couple times during one of our tournaments, but he seemed like a great guy and he is obviously very respected.

Thanks for sharing your story Jay!

Bob was one of my favorite players to have ever met on DSG. We were always testing out his new openings and moves, checking out all the lines. (I think he was just being nice trying to teach me the game! haha) He made me smile all the while kickin' my *** and makin' me like it, always giving me every opportunity in the game to rethink a move, analyze the position a while longer, point me in the right direction, try and teach me something, allow me to adjust my move knowing the whole time he had me at move 3 or 4 and nothing I did mattered, he was a sneaky lil bastage! He definitely left his mark on the game of te! On top of his te knowledge he was always nice, quite funny n entertaining. He was such a character! I think I used the word ornery a few times in the same sentence with 'dufus'! I will miss him dearly and this game won't be the same without dufus around! I always admired his ability to put up with me and my stupid moves!

Peace Love and Light to You and Yours, Bugnone family! My heart goes out to ya Mikey and to all that knew Bob/Dufus.

Bob and brother Mike are nice guys. I'd taken a cab to the tourney in Vegas and bummed a ride back to my hotel from Bob and Mike after the tourney and really enjoyed watching the two of them play and getting to visit with them. If memory serves, Bob gave the eventual champion dimitriking a good run for his money. Bodo was there as well. Maybe we could make the next live tourney somewhat of a tribute to the two.
