Does anyoen know if Tom Braunlich is still around? Or if he plays online somewhere? I just happened to come across his name and Rollie's and I was just wondering if anyone knows anything about them these days.

Yes, he is still around. He hasn't been playing much recently but he threatens to join either a PBeM or DSG tournament this summer. Rolle Tesh is around too, but I haven't really had any communication with him. -MM

I'd like to see Tom Braunlich, Rollie Tesh, and the rest play again

To all -
I would like to see some of the '80's Pente over-the-board champions and top players play against some of the '00's turn-based champions and top players of today in a turn-based tourney either at IYT or PBEM and/or a real-time tourney at Dweebo's.
I would personally put up at least $100 in a heart beat to contribute towards a prize fund where the winner gets 60%, 2nd gets 30%, and 3rd gets 10% (or something along those lines) to personally play against Tom or Rollie or to see them play against Scott Justice (again), Oleg Stepanov, Dmitri Krasnonosov, or any other top players of today.
Would anyone else be willing to put up some money for such a grand endeavor?

I would enjoy seeing that too. Braunlich mentioned that he might play a tournament online, but probably not for a while. He is in midst of a move. He also likes keryo pente more than pente.
I asked about what he knew about the old players. Tesh is out of the country. Marvin Cooper died. And that was about all he knew.
Other than being rusty, I think the main challenge for the old school would be to come up with tricky openings for the second player. Many of our old attempts, like the exchange opening, seem to have little play left in them.
The mode of the game would also play a big part. I think that some of the current players would struggle in an over-the-board contest since they are used to the turn based system where they can analyze the position in depth. On the other hand, the old timers would have a difficult time coming up with wins as the second player and would probably be at a disadvantage on the turn based system.
