Heh, I'm planning on donating soon... just as soon as I get to college and my mom won't notice money mysterious disappearing from my account lol
Zoey, that we're the same person... oh man. that makes me laugh. Especially considering I know that we're not, and so do you... but it's not like that evidence alone will convince people lol.
But yea, i'll put some money up for this... the issues that people seem to want to fix aren't the ones I have, but oh well.

I'm not a big fan of this trend of paying Dweebo for development time with "donations". I think people should donate generously to the site because they enjoy using it and wish to donate to the cause, but Dweebo should use the money any way he wishes without having to itemize how it is being spent for everyone to see. Plus, this is a "dot-org" after all and he has always handled it that way, not looking to personally profit from the site directly, to which we are all grateful.
It's not like he gets nothing out of it though. He is a software / web developer by profession and this site is an incredible resume builder. It is also a great platform for him to experiment with new technologies, learn new skills and keep on the cutting edge so that he can apply those skills to his day job. Plus, there's a lot of pride of ownership and everyone telling him that he rocks (You rock, Dweebo!)
However, a couple of important issues have come out of this discussion related to Dweebo's absenses.
The first issue is running and maintaining the site and the second is developing the site.
I think Dweebo has gotten pretty close to having his site run on autopilot in his absense and should work to make it so. This would be done by fixing some of that buggy code and through the use of a few trusted Admins (and Super Admins?) to do such things as run tournaments, moderate forums, monitor the game rooms, deal with bad apples, reset the server, call tech support, and so on.
As for future development, right now it pretty much dies without Dweebo's active involvement. I know of a few cases where the source code and documentation has been sent to other people in hopes that they can eventually familiarize themselves enough with the current code to be able to contribute features, either directly or through some kind of check-in and review process with Dweebo. The code and documentation is kind of a bear though for someone just jumping into it and so far no one has been able to contribute in this way. I hope this improves some day, but for now, Dweebo is the only developer and he obviously has limited time to commit to the project.
I agree that the development (and news) forums should be used more, especially by Dweebo. I think members would love to see, as a first step, Dweebo going back through all his checklists, wishlists, notes and ideas and reorganize and prioritize them into a large list of things he'd like to see happen with the site (I think such lists exist in the development forum, but might be out of date). When you start thinking about it, there are so many things. From the ones you just mentioned, to new database filtering and game uploading features, to changing the ratings system to score the results of rated sets instead of games, to adding more game types, to adding buttons in the game room and on and on and on.
Just seeing a list of all these things and the ones that are currently being worked on, the ones that will be worked on soon and not so soon would be a great thing.

Good post up2ng (as always).
However I don't think people are donating much nowadays because I told them not to! I didn't need the money for server fees this year, so there was no need for donations (2008 might be another story).
And of course excellent points about how I benefit from this site in non-monetary ways. It is a great thing on the resume and more importantly, creating the site taught me a ton of stuff that I was able to apply to my day job. And I'm certainly am not desperate for money, I'm doing alright currently.
The site has been on autopilot for quite awhile now, I'm amazed I finally got the server stable enough to run for months at a time, I used to have to start it up after crashing every few days. I am not around much so there is a great need for more admin people, or more ways for the community in general to run the place.
I agree there is pretty much zero chance that anyone else is going to come in and be able to help out with future development.
I do have a weird feeling about making money from the site in this way, however it is still a dot-org, and it is still free for anyone who wants to use it. I'll pay taxes on any earnings. I am not going to say that this is the new way that things will get done around here, and you'll have to pay me to make any future changes, but lets see how this works. Because right now, I'm not working on the site at all, at least this will get some things happening again. Once I get interested in things again I'll probably want to keep working!
Yup Dweebo pretty much told us all that he didn't want/need any more $$$$ so I have been sending my millions to kids in Beverly Hills with low self-esteem issues instead.......I adopted a kid named Trevor whose only escape from his harsh reality is to videotape him and his friends setting fire to big stacks of money piled into his jaguar convertible on Rodeo Drive. So sad that Dweebo will be taking away from Trevor, but alas, pente's more important than children.

ok so a recap.
we pay dweebo a initial firestarter fee of $400(dweebo pays the tax for it) for said new features. and if we are lucky he will do more after that for free until he gets burnt out.
and we can all agree with that?
Scire hostis animum - Intelligere ludum - Nosce te ipsum - Prima moventur conciliat - Nolite errare
Well I think you're on target for the most part Zoey, the only exception being the idea that this is in some way defining or setting pecedence for what can/should be expected of Dweebo in the future. I feel that the way he intended to come across was optimistic, but certainly one must anticipate that he will be just as busy in the months to come if not more so what with being a family guy and all.........That being said I'm super happy lucky smiley faced about what's coming around the bend and am very grateful that yourself and others like you are stepping up to maintain what is a slice of heavenly pie in my lil' universe , and as always, thanks Dweebo!

I don't mind donating, but i gotta put in my two cents worth of programming advice.
A Ban Button: the reason for this button over the private table thing is that some peeps want everyone to be able to come in and socialize, and simply be able to ban certain peeps from said table. The ban would remain in effect until ownership shifts to someone else or the owner lifts ban. A private room wont allow anyone to come in accept under invite, so most wont even try to ask, with them assuming that those in the private table actually want privacy for what ever nefarious activities they are trying to hide from the rest of us.
Ignore Button: this one prevents invites until u next log in.
Turret’s Button: This one forces a random cuss word to be inserted into someone’s normal chatting about every 5th word or so, which could force the individual to shut his trap, or risk drawing the err of the admin who may boot them from the site. The longer said peep chats the more grotesque and explicit the cussing becomes until the said peep is spouting crazy sexual innuendo about themselves and their neighbors dead cat. Eventually said peep would become so shammed that they may extract themselves pronto.

Right I agree that a ban button is not a bad idea, it just seems like alot of work for something that we can already sort of accomplish with private tables. I can see how that isn't really the best solution though. I think if there were more admins around then combined with the ability of admins to boot players from server we wouldn't need a ban player button. I'll look into how much more work it would be and see if I can make it happen as part of this effort.
> Ignore Button: this one prevents invites until > u next log in. Actually I think the ignore button will ignore for all time. Especially since it will apply to turn-based invites as well. You'll be able to see and edit your ignore list through the "My Profile" page.

my ideas for upgrades, is in turn-based area, when typing a message to my opponent, it would be nice to be able to see more of the conversation, just like in the main room !, also in turn-based when a game is completed it just disappears and goes strait to the message area, it would be nice if when a game is completed, it stays in turn-based until I can inspect it and then I can send it to where ever in needs to go to...
