Books that need to be read
Posted: Jul 31, 2007, 5:13 AM

Modeled after the lovely Movie thread, I thought I would start one on books...please feel free to post on this thread about books.

I will start out by saying I have many favorite books, but there are just some that you can read over and over again. I like to read. All kinds of books for all kinds of reasons. Sometimes I read to learn. Sometimes I read for distraction. Sometimes I read for clarity. Sometimes I read just to read. All I know is that I like to read.

Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance by Robert M. Pirsig, or Atlas Shrugged or Fountainhead by Ayn Rand are good books to read.

For those fantasy readers there is the series by Weis & Hickman The Dragonlance Chronicles. I really enjoyed this series. It was easily read and had decent character development.

I like The Art of War by Sun Tzu, I, Ching (Classic of Changes or Book of Changes), Kurt Vonnegut's Cat's Cradle, Stranger in a Strange Land by L. Ron Hubbard, Robot Dreams by Isaac Asimov.

For those that like a good biography, I have enjoyed His Excellency by Joseph J. Ellis, The Great Physicists from Galileo to Einstein by George Gamow...he also wrote a decent one on Ben Franklin but the name eludes me!

Cosmos by Carl Sagan was a fascinating book. A must for any star gazer.

One must not forget those childhood classics like Where the Sidewalk Ends or Where the Monsters Are.

I could go on and on for a few more pages but I figure those titles will give enough fodder for a post or two. Enjoy!

I love that trippy art in your picture. Where did you get it?

If I do not accept a game invite right away, it means I will once I have fewer games in progress.

Good to "see" you, Dmitri.

To answer your question, I am not really sure where I got it but I did a google search on "kaleidoscopes" and went to images and it came up a few pages back. I have recently gotten into kaleidoscopes...they seem to be a good way to calm/center my thoughts as of late. They are so beautiful.

Hope you are doing well, Dmitri.

Peace Love and Light,

ps. You can go to the hobby/craft store and pick up a kit to create your own. You can put just about anything in them and make some pretty cool images.

It is supposed to be. Apologies for getting off topic but I couldn't help it, someone asked me a question and I answered. I will do my best to not do it again!

Bad Partica. I recommend 'Stay on Topic or Die' by Sun Tzu's accomplished, but lesser known and arguably a bit too heavy-handed cousin, Frank Tzu.

Yoshikawa Eiji wrote Musashi loosely based on the historical story of Miyamoto Musashi, the greatest swordsman to ever live. Musashi himself wrote Go Rin No Sho(The Book of Five Rings) which is similar to Sun Tzu's book the art of war.

Another few favs of mine are Ender's Game by Orson Scot Card, Bram Stoker's Dracula, Phillip K. Dick's A Scanner Darkly, and of course Tolkin's Lord of The Rings Trilogy

"George Gamow...he also wrote a decent one on Ben Franklin but the name eludes me!"

If you want to read a biography about Benjamin Franklin, read The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin. It's a difficult read because it's all in that 18th century English, but it's an interesting read.

The Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger. Fascinating bit of modern fiction. Despite the title, it's barely in the sci-fi genre.
