Alternate rule for pente: what do you think?
Posted: Mar 8, 2007, 1:51 AM

A new player was surprised by the rules of pente that we have, claiming that the better version has an additional rule where, after the winning player makes pente, the loser gets a chance to stay alive by capturing as many pairs as he can on the pente, trying to get a double capture or a 5th pair to win. Only if the winner can keep the pente there through all the captures does he get the win.

I think this rule is an absolutely unnecessary complication of the endgame, serving only to restrict play to conservative lines and give a dead opponent a chance to win on a fluke. What does everyone else think?

honestly though, it sounds real interesting. Maybe we should have it implemented as a new game - boat style rules.

Would be a hell of a lot better fun than that dodgy C6 game..

I personally think the rule is pointless- the situation does not arrive that often, the person who would benefit from it is someone who probably should be losing these kinds of games anyways, and really most situations a good player would be able to work around.

However, more game variations are always fun... and maybe I'm wrong, it could be the most groundbreaking thing to happen to endgame since... idk, alcohol.

exactly spif. and pews, while better than c6, it's still a pretty lame rule, doing no good for the game and a significant amount of bad.

'Boat Rules' - Almost every thursday night for over twenty
years a group of friends has meet on my boat to play pente.

After several years we decided that the game would be more
changeling if captures {we call them 'eats'} could be taken
from the pente if available. In our version of the game
a pente is not a pente until no eats can be taken from it. Five eats win period. We have found that this change
levels the playing field and makes the game more intense.

This version has worked well for us over the years, however it might prove difficult to program.

I agree that the programming may not be the easiest. But it does make for a very interesting alternative, with a different strategy involved in building the win.

Karl, I don't see what it does that's so 'bad' as you put it for the game, since it's just another alternate play?

it's not "bad" as an alternate version in the same way that d-pente and keryo are, it's "bad" as a replacement for the current pente rules, which the person i was debating said it should be.

Karlw, you make it sound like I said to you something like "I didn't know these were the real rules of original pente". I never said something like this, so I'm not sure how you got that impression. I've known the real rules since i first met the game 13 years ago. However I've allways played by -Boat Rules- for the last 13 years, and have prefered them. Now I am relearning the strategy of regular pente, not there rules. I've played 66 games on this site now, out of which 40 are wins, and at this moment I still prefer boat rules pente.
Don't worry Karlw Boat rules will not ruin your game. There will allways be regular pente for you and the people that choose to play it. If it does get created you won't be forced to play it. It would merly be there for the people that dont view it as an abomination to pente, and would like a fun alternative to the game. Just becuase you dont want a certain version doesnt mean that you can't be supportive of those who do want to play it. You are not cutting it down in the defence of the world or of pente. You are cutting it down for your own selfish intent. Perhaps Karlw now that your king of the hill with your crown and little red square, and that you've mastered regular pente, you might not want to learn the game all over again with the rest of us and possibly others might play it better than you. zing!
But seriously,I believe that this version can be programed regarless of dificulties. I hope MMark or Dweebo will find it interesting enough to persue it.
~Long live "Boat rules"~

Im not hating on regular pente. just I would like to see boat rules made, for I prefer them. I respect your prefered original version and have been playing it here to try and get better. you dont have to respect my prefered version. But remember your passing a fast judgment bassed on theories of a version you've never even played before, against people who have been playing it for decades. You are 19? Boat rules has spread like wild fire creating a comunity of master pente players, and been played regularly far before you were a twinkle in your parents eyes, with all due respect.
