other computer programs

Zillions of Games has a fairly good pente
opponent -- but you should modify the rules of its ninuki
game for it to play true pente. I challenged my
program and Barykin's program against Zillions thinking
at 3 minutes per move and both of our programs beat
Zillions 2-0, but they were decent games.

A good
program for LINUX systems is available - Bill's program,
I now have a link to it on my page. It was written
some years ago when computers were slower so it only
thinks up to 6 moves ahead (like my level 6). I
challenged my level 6 against his program and we split
games. If he had time to update and improve it (which he
doesn't) it could be very good.

A couple of fairly
decent programs are Pentango and PowerPente. Pentango is
available as shareware, there is a link on my page,
PowerPente is no longer available. Mark Okun is continually
working on his Java XO program, but I have not gotten it
to play well against me. The other programs I have
seen are terrible. Anyone know of any other decent
programs?

-MM

I've found three programs for the (Classic) Mac.
None of them are particularly strong or attractive,
but Mike Willegal's Cinco plays the best game of the
three -- roughly the same as level four or five of
Mammel's Pente program. The other two programs are called
Pente and MacPente.

Michael Sinz has a program
for the Palm OS but I don't know how well it
plays.

I've put up links to several programs, including Mac,
UNIX, Palm OS and DOS/OS2 software, at

http://users.abac.com/MeriBird/Omok/sware.html
if anyone's
using something other than Windows out
there.

The Milton Bradly cd has pente but it plays no where near as good as Mark's ai.

But... my grandkids like to play it!
The expert level can beat an
average player.

What about the Macpente, I have been using that, anyone else use it, and have a
comment?

Thanks,

Jon Ziegler

MacPente, at its toughest difficulty level, seems
to be a little weaker than level two of Mammel's
Pente. I sometimes see it make arbitrary moves and I'm
not sure if this is intentional or not.

Pente
(for the Mac) appears to be roughly equivalent to
level four of Mammel's program. Cinco can beat level
four a little less than 2/3 of the time. I would try
playing Cinco against a higher level of Mammel's Pente,
but the emulator I have was written for a much older
Mac and it runs too slowly for that.
