Multiplayer pente

Sorry if this has been asked before... i'm new

i was checking out the actual game online, so i could play in person... and it said 2 to 4 players.

how does 4 players work?

they play as teams? or would all 4 people try to get their own "pente"?

thank you...

I believe you can play it either way, but I'm not entirely positive. Others on this site may know more. Every Pente game I played was with two people.

I think it's like how euchre is played, in teams of two that try to work together to win. I think each two people get one color to share, and take turns in a circle. However, I have no clue why anyone would ever want to play this way. Rather pointless...

The following rules would work great for 4 player team pente.

4 Player Pente rules

4 players divide up into 2 teams. Each player has a unique color, and they move in the following order; Team 1 player 1 moves 1st, Team 2 player 1 moves 2nd, Team 1 player 2 moves 3rd, and team 2 player 2 moves 4th, and so on.

Note: I suggest 2 dark colors to play vs. 2 light colors, i.e. blue and black vs. yellow and white or something similar. Light vs. dark will cut down on the confusion of who is playing whom.

For a team to win one of its players must get five of his\her colored stones in a row, or one team must capture a sum of five pairs. Any combination works, i.e. if team 1 player 1 has two pairs and team 1 player 2 has three pairs, the sum equates to five pairs and a victory. The pairs can be any combination of stone colors, i.e. a single captured pair may be comprised of the same color, or it may be comprised one stone from player 1 and one stone from player 2. Though a capturable pair can consist of 2 separate colors, a capture can only be made between ones own stones.

Scoring for ratings can be done on a team basis, with each team devising unique names for their team. The team name would receive a rating just like individuals in 2 player pente. When a new team is formed the average of each player’s individual pente ratings will determine the beginning rating of their team, but once the 1st game is played then the team rating will take over, and individual ratings will not be affected. This means that a single player could play on multiple teams. Of course in a tournament each player would be limited to a single team.

one other thing. capping will probobly run crazy rampant and it may be necessary to bump the pair total count from 5 to 7.

i think it would be fabulous to have it here. a new game and what a challenge it would be to have more players at the table...definitely you would have to have 7 pair captures as discussed. bring it to the site, peter! i predict more players will be coming to this site!

what'd ya think?

hey Richardiii

thanks for the rules... that's great, and seems like a cool variation.

It would be nice to see it here on the site... however, sometimes i find it hard enough to get a 1vs1 game going, and i've already invited 3 friends to join the site, so 2v2 might be even harder...

thanks for the post though... appreciate your input and everyone else that tried to help

see you all around...

I've not played team 4 person pente but I have played everyone for themselves 4 person pente on my home board game and I like that version. You can still do as richard says by capturing a red and a blue stone or both red or blue with your own stones. Now I've primarily played 4 person in Keryo Pente and not regular. For keryo Pente you don't need to bump the capture limit even with more stones on the board I believe. You find that you have a hard enough time watching out for unblocked 3 in a row and four in a row to be too worried about someone capturing stones like mad. I also find an interesting situation if someone makes 4 in a row unblocked on either end. If you are the next to act you get to place a move advantages to yourself instead of dealing with blocking the 4 stones. Then the next two players to act have their moves forced on them to either block the 4 on either end or capture part of the 4. Also if someone has 3 in a row unblocked and he/she is next to act after you, you don't have to deal with the 3 in row on your turn you can let them make it into a 4 in a row and just place a stone that is advantages to you.

Team 4 player pente would be great as well adding subtle but different variations to the way that you play. Now the question becomes would it be bad form to tell your team mate where to go to help you out or would it be allowed. Can you discuss placement theory with your team mate or would that be bad form

While we are on the subject how about 4 player Connect 6 would that be way too crazy or would that add some interesting fun to the game. Also would you have to make it so that the first two player can only place one stone and the next two get to place two or just leave it at the first person placing only one.
