What have you found to be the most effective starting move for the 2nd
player?

I can't decide if I like to play right next to his piece, or one
down and two over...

Jake,
I have decided to not play as the second
player anymore, but before my recent stance I used to
play R1U1. I still think that's the best move, but it
has been heavily analyzed. So R4U1 is my second
favorite. Your R1 is not too effective in my opinion, and
your R2U1 transforms into R1U1 after white plays R3.
My best advice in winning as the second player is to
play over the board games as opposed to email games.
In all seriousness, check out DSG's database online
or Oleg's database to get an idea of the different
moves for the second player.
Scott
