3 or 4 players game?
Posted: Oct 24, 2005, 1:21 PM

heya,

looking at the ad for the Pente Tube, i noticed it comes with 4 sets of stones, and claims playability for 2, 3 or 4 players.

How does a 3 or 4-player game actually work? Is there one winner and 3 losers? Or 3 winners and one loser?

Then, could we have 3 or 4-players games here too?

wondering...

it is possible to play 2vs2 - player 1 and player 2 both as white and player 3 and 4 both as black. P1 starts, than plays P3, than P2 makes second move for white, than P4 moves as black and so on. easy system and a lot of fun while playing
but i have no idea how 3 players can play?!?

I have played with both three and four players. In a non-team four person game(or three person game) each player has a different color. This means that you can capture multi-colored pairs in addition to capturing pairs in the standard way. Another difference is that you only need to get a four in a row to win. Only one person wins and as you might imagine the games tend to be a real mess, but it can be pretty enjoyable.

There is an interesting "flaw" that often occurs in multiplayer pente. I'll describe the problem with 3 players, A, B and C.

Suppose that player A, moving first, decides to take the initiative after a few moves and threatens to win. His threat must be blocked on ONE side. Next, player B, instead of responding to the threat by player A, makes a move which threatens a win of his own, which requires blocks on TWO sides to be stopped. Now player C, who cannot win with his current move may now "decide who wins" by choosing to either block A's threat or one of B's threats. Whoever he blocks, the other player will win on their next move.

This might not be a great example, but this situation can indeed occur in multiplayer games. Because of this, it cannot be played competitively, but would be fun to try it out just for fun!

Yes it is certainly possible to have 3/4 player games here, but it would be alot of work for me

I think the rules that come with the Pente Tube explain it but I haven't looked that closely at them.

It is actually listed on my TODO, but its not something I will take on any time soon.

Haven't studied the multi-person games to the degree up has but agree with him that it takes the competitive edge away from better players. I've been playing 4 person games with my family and students using the new tube set I have. It's good fun in that the playing field is leveled considerably but the competitive edge for better players is taken away.

I was thinking today that a four player team game might be possible on the existing system here. In team play the team members take turns playing so maybe the second players for each team could just tell the first players where to move using the chat function. Just a thought.

Lepew! I would like to add that the Mark Mammel program has the option to play with multiple computer opponents. one of my old favorites... I call it cut throat pente( after the pool game)...very fun and hard to predict...ups comment of a flaw ?thats the rules I always loved it....
I wish it could be found here for a long time ... I would really enjoy seeing a 3 way game between R3... up2ng and dweebo .. lol....del out....

the basic principal in 3 player mode is....you can capture 2 different opponents stones at the same time. All other rules apply.

Maybe we should try this a bit at the next over the board thing that you guys do. At least the bugs could be worked out and see how fun it is or is not, with much less work for dweebo.

When I started playing pente with my co-workeras we played 3 and 4 player games quite a bit....its a hoot! Its definately true about the competition being pretty much impossible as the play often comes to a point of one player having to make a decision on which opponent's stones to capture/threaten, etc.....nonetheless I'm quite sure that many around here would get sucked into this vortex even further!! LOL
