Live Tournament to be held in Austin, TX Oct 1st 2005
Posted: Jul 11, 2005, 9:04 PM

Hello fellow pente enthusiasts!

Homebrew has gotten an itch to host another live-in-person pente tournament. Brew has enlisted the help of Bodo Konze, myself, and Jumpin721. They have arranged a spot at Dobie Mall in Austin, TX at the corner of 21st and Guadalupe on Saturday October 1st, 2005 at 11 am.

The address is:
2025 Guadalupe St
Austin, TX 78705

The date is:
Saturday October 1st, 2005 at 11:00 am

If you have any questions please email homebrew via the email function here or reply to this post. You can email him through his profile.

Tell everyone you know to make plans to be there! Please help spread the word even if you are not planning on attending. Homebrew, Bodo, myself and Jumpin721 (he plays on www.pente.net) would appreciate all the help we can get!

Just want everyone to help get the word out to those that are interested. Yeehaw! WOOHOO!

Just a bit to add to Partica's posting. Some of us that got together in Las Vegas in 2004 had a blast playing some live pente and getting to meet and visit with our on-line pente buddies. I understand why another organized tourney was not held but we wanted to perhaps "get the ball rolling" again and have another live tourney and go from there. The idea is to get a group of pente players together, have a tourney and see if there is any interest in putting together a group that would organize regional tourneys and perhaps a once a year championship. Even if nothing comes of that, we hope to just get together and have fun playing some pente. Partica, jumpin721, myself and others got together last year at my tourney and really had fun.

As far at Austin is concerned, we wanted a place to play that would be centrally located for many of the on-line players and that would not cost anything. We figured Austin would be a good place with plenty to do besides play pente and Bodo Konze graciously found a place to play for free. We know that Austin is out of the way for many players but if all goes well, we can perhaps line up future tourneys in other areas as well.

Some have asked about entry fees and such. Because this is nothing official in that it is not sponsored by any organization, we thought we'd play it by ear and perhaps if all who show agree to put up a small entry fee, maybe at least the winner could recoup some gas money

We are hoping to have enough to have an intermediate and advanced brackett so players of similar level can be matched up against one another. So don't worry about "not being good enough." We had two brackets at the tourney I hosted last year and it went really well.

I would second Partica and encourage any interested to attend or if anyone has any questions they can e-mail myself or partica through this site or contact jumpin721 through his website or pente.net.

A live tournament would appeal to me. I enjoyed the three I went to. I was highly disappointed with the vegas 2004 turnout but maybe this one in texas will have a good turnout. I will be in school so I cannot say if I cna attned but I will try to see what I can do.

If I do not accept a game invite right away, it means I will once I have fewer games in progress.

Hey cw,

From what I understand it is being held the same place the chess club is held on Monday nights. I will try and find out more detail for you on that.

Hope to see you there!

OK, the latest news on the tourney next Sat. is that everything is a go. As many of you have probably read, we're making the tourney a memorial tourney for Bodo. First Annual Bodo Konze Memorial Tournemant. $20 entry fee for the tourney that will cover placques for the top three finishers in the tourney rules bracket. Partica is also donating a new tube set to be given as a prize. For the standard rules bracket, we're giving at least a pente set for the winner (still some details to be worked out Any money left over will be donated to a memorial in Bodo's name.

One of Bodo's friends has been in touch with me and the meeting place is on the second floor of Dobie Mall by the theater. If anyone has any questions they can make a posting here or e-mail me at
crsc@centex.net

Thanks and hope to see many of you there.

How many people have signed up so far? Do you have a names list? I would like to see it if so...

Thanks. I'm still going to try and make it, but no promises. As some of you know, my girlfriend and I were very close to Bodo, so she knows it's real important to me to be there if at all possible. We are trying to make it happen...I've got my fingers crossed. Dmitri, will you be there?

We'll have all the details ready to post soon along with photos. The short of it is ten players played a round-robin format (everyone plays everyone) and after the first round four were tied for first. We held a round-robin round two and partica up and swept me, jumpin721, and kmbailey.

Then excel showed up (work committments had kept him from playing in the tourney) and showed everyone how to play

Great job Partica and thanks to all. Had folks from Texas, Oklahoma, Georgia, Virginia, and California.

Congrats partica, wish I could have been there to participate! I look forward to seeing some photos of the event.

Also, I hope someone recorded the games, I would love to have some live tournament data in the game database!
