Reinstating timed out games during tourney.
Posted: Aug 23, 2026, 12:57 AM

All participants in the 2026 pente masters tourney.
Homebrew is requesting to have his timed out games reinstated in the tourney to resume at the positions he timed out. I dont care personally.
But, this can effect all players in the tourney, and it can effect who is in next round, and when next round starts. This request I believe is highly irregular. And could set a president for all future players to be able to demand same privilege. Certainly Madmike might care if his games reactivate.

So I leave it to the community to weigh in.

Your thoughts?

I saw it happen in Round 1 in some of jsspivey's games and didn't comment on it.

I think all such situations should be arbitrated by the tournament director, rainwolf. Hopefully there are already guidelines in place for when this happens. If I were director, I would consider what extenuating circumstances led to the timeouts. In the case of an actual emergency, I would reinstate the games. Barring that, I think the result should stand.

I don't think it should be a factor in the decision, but I will add that there appears to be a low likelihood that reinstating homebrew's games will affect who advances to next round.

Finally, a personal note: I was following homebrew's P1 game vs. you, and I would enjoy to see it finished, but that has zero bearing on the final decision.

It's no use going back to yesterday, because I was a different person then.

I am in favor of reinstating games as long as the timed out player's opponent agrees. If there was an emergency or something (rainwolf's discretion), I am in favor of reinstating the games regardless of the opponent's thoughts.

I'm with Karlw, the situation should be arbitrated by the tournament director.
I don't see how it matters what the community thinks or feels.

My current approach is to delegate the decision to the timed out player's opponent, if the player requests it. Ideally I get a message from both players individually to confirm agreement to the request. I leave it to the player themself to seek approval from their opponent and have their opponent message me.

I see the games timed out, and can deduce from this thread that you would be okay with that, but I didn't yet get a request from homebrew to actually reinstate them.

You are asking all participants of Masters.

Well, ok, I agree. And I'd mention that 2 days/move is a very tight time control. I've lost a lot of tournaments due to the New Year, and I still can't understand why the control is "N days per move" instead of "N days per game + M hours addition per move made". For me this time control is just barring participation and requires some extra effort at least for Masters.

So if anyone is experiencing troubles with time, I'd let him finish his games no matter the reason why he forfeited the game.

Probably outside the scope of this thread, but when I implemented time controls for Boardspace.net, overtime doesn't end the game immediately. Instead, the "winning" opponent is given the option of taking the win or giving the opponent more time.

Especially when playing online, there are too many ways that it may be appropriate to ignore the preset time controls.
