2020 Masters Tourney Round 4
Posted: Oct 2, 2020, 4:59 PM

So, as we approach round 4, my question is, what will the sections look like? and who am i playing against?
I'll assume 2 sections of 3 people in each.

It was agreed that in case of 6 players left it will be only one big section.

Sounds fun, and more study per round.

Should be a thrilling round! I personally haven't faced 5 top players at once since around 2012.

Rainwolf can hopefully clarify if he sees this, but based on past results I believe that the winner of this section will be the tournament champion. If multiple players tie for 1st, I believe there will be a Round 5 round robin between 1st place players, with the same rules.

It's no use going back to yesterday, because I was a different person then.

Perhaps the code has changed since 2006, but in the Open round robin of that year one player (gnoza) had a higher score than the other five players, yet the player with the next highest score, richardiii, advanced with gnoza to a round six.

Retired from TB Pente, but still playing live games & exploring variants like D, poof and boat

I noticed that as well. The 2006 Open was a live tournament plagued by delays. Round 6 was a huge clusterf*** and you should not use the ending of that tournament as a point of reference. The last two Masters tournaments have been much more orderly, and have both been decided by the outright winner of the round with 1 section:

2018: https://pente.org/gameServer/tournaments/statusRound.jsp?eid=1399&round=4

2019: https://pente.org/gameServer/tournaments/statusRound.jsp?eid=1456&round=4

I believe these have been the only pente.org tournaments since the 2006 Open to have the round robin format.

if I'm reading the code correctly, as it stands now, if there's a clear winner in the final section, the tournament is over, otherwise the top two scores will advance to the next round, not just the tied top scores.

Interesting. So I understand that to mean that if the ordered final score is 8-7-etc., then the player with 8 wins outright, whereas if instead it is 7-7-6-etc., then every player with 7 or 6 points advances to the next round. Do I have that right?

I think it should be changed.

Let's consider a hypothetical situation:

Only one games remaining, actual standings:

1. Player A - 7-3
2. Player B - 6-3
3. Player C - 5-4
4. Player D - 5-5
5. Player E - 3-7
6. Player F - 3-7

There is only one game left, between Player B and C. What played C should do right now in order to have chance to win tournament? He can advance to next round only if he lost It's ridiculous.

I agree 100% with pente_gon. This needs to be changed. If there is a tie for 1st, the players with the top score only should advance, not the top two scores.
