The numbers game

Any thoughts on the numbers game? i.e. Pente rating points. I keep running into people rated way higher or lower than they play. It's confusing.

Perhaps the way the playing style of the two players interacts is more likely to determine the winner than how the pair played against other players.

Are you playing them live or turn based? When was their last game before they played you? How many games have they played in the last few months? Did they get their rating primarily from playing a small group (or one) of players? These can all be potential factors. Ratings calculations were changed from draws not being counted to draws being counted about a year ago, so someone like myself who has only played a few games in the past year may have a higher rating than another player who has played frequently in the past year (like Karlw). There may be other factors as well, but these are a few possibilities.

Also, the more games a player has played, the more accurate their rating will be, generally. So take a rating based on six or a dozen sets with a pretty big grain of salt.

Mustn't we consider the improvement rate...! 1 bad day can take weeks 2 recover from... so U have someone blue who was red three games ago, so is he blue or red....? Or just some where in between....

depends on who he beat to get to red and who he lost to getting back to blue
