fun pente variant; any programmers?
Posted: Mar 22, 2001, 5:36 AM

A really fun and I feel better variant to classic
pente is played where if 1 player has two stones placed
with one space and one of player 2's stones in play
between, the space becomes a capture if played into by
player 2. This allows for more defensive options during
the game. It also can set up a situation where if a
player plays into a space it can be a poof in more
than one direction at once, thus giving the opponent 3
or more stones by the play. This sacrifice can
sometimes be a worthwhile move, but would mean that ten
stones rather than five pairs of stones wins the game.
If anyone out there would like to learn more about
this variant or try programming it, please drop me a
line: watsu13@m... thanks

I don't understand what you're describing. Are
you saying that an empty space would count as an
opponent's stone, as far as the ability to make a capture
goes? (Wow, it IS hard to describe, isn't it?)

Welcome to the club watsu!
Hey, that poof
pente sounds fun! Some ingenious mind thought that up!
No way to play it at Dwoobo's or IYT that I know of.
Dweebo would have to program it in there, I
guess?

I'll try to be as clear as possible. In a
situation where there is a potential for a capture, the
potential disappears in classic pente once two stones have
been placed surrounding two spaces, so that the
opponent can now play within those spaces without being
captured. In the variation I'm describing, once one of the
inner spaces is occupied the other cannot be. If a
player chooses to play into that second space both
pieces are forfeited(sometimes this is a good move). I
hope that this is clear. If not I'll try again perhaps
using k10, l11 type examples instead of words. Thanks
for response.

OK, I understand now. That WOULD add challenge to the game, indeed!

A question about the proposed variant:

If the stone placement would
cause more than one surrounded pair to be created at the same time, would you
intend that all the new pairs be removed?

Yes, this is what allows three pieces or an odd number of pieces to be captured
at once. Therefore rather than 5 captures winning, 10 pieces wins.
