Donor Benefits
Posted: Feb 25, 2005, 4:22 AM

A while back, me, Dweebo, and a few others discussed if anyone had any ideas on new donor benefits to try and get more people to donate. I meant to put up this thread a long time ago, but never got to it (sorry). If anyone has any ideas on it or just general ideas for improvement, i thought this would be a good place to put them. I don't know if there's a place already for this, so I just decided to make a thread. So yeah anyways I thought it'd be cool if somehow you could see on the main page who is logged on. Anyone think that'd be nice?

2 small improvements I do plan on adding for donors, hopefully soon.

1. More color choices, with perhaps a color grid shown and you can just click one.
2. Bigger size pictures allowed, like 200x200 50k maybe.

As far as listing players who are playing on the main page, that is possible and would be cool. The one downside to that, and the reason I hesitate to do that is I fear that players might just check the main page, see not many players are on, and not login. Then fewer and fewer players join, because everyone is sitting on the main page waiting for someone else to join!

What I might consider though is to great a "Who's Online" page, that would list all players in the game room, AND all players browsing around the DSG web pages. Not much different than what you suggest, but somehow I like it better.

that is sort of what i meant by it actually. i was thinking just people that have logged into the site, not necessasarily just those in the game room. as for people not getting on because of this, i actually think it would help that because i know of a lot of people who get on and see that not many people are in the room so they dont go themselves. This is basically to combat that cuz people sometimes just get on and check forums.

A simple addition would be to intregrate it with the MSN or yahoo chat things. I then could tell the site that if more than 10 people are logged on and I am logged into MSN then it will send me a message telling me that 10 people are logged on. I have seen other web sites that have done stuff like this. Also it would be very useful for tournements to have it message me when a specific user logs on.

This is all just dreaming stuff, I think the site is really good now and not really needs to be done but if you are bored and wanna add stuff this would be cool.

I added a Who's Online page this morning, and I increased Donor picture size allowed to 200x200 pixels with a 35k limit.

Technical note:
The reason I didn't allow bigger pics before was when viewing them through the game room, the pic data was sent from the game server. It was a performance issue because every time a player has something in their profile change (after every game they play for example), all of their profile data is resent out to all players. So a player with a 25k picture would cause 200k of traffic after every game if 8 players were logged in. Now, pictures are loaded from the web server, and I believe the java applet will actually cache them as well, so this should help performance and allow us to have bigger pics.

Why not donate before you die spifster

If you do, you'll now be able to select just about ANY color under the sun for your player name. I have added a color wheel so you can easily pick out of 200 or so common colors, or you can even enter in your own color code, just use the format #HHHHHH, where each H is a digit in Hexidecimal format. This is the same format used in HTML to specify colors for a web page, so you shouldn't have any problems finding your own custom colors if you so desire.

Oh, and before you go trying to choose white, think again! I will check to make sure any color you choose isn't to "bright", no one is allowed to be invisible!

Enjoy all the pretty colors everyone (everyone who has donated that is).

Dweebo, I entered this color: FFD9FF and it doesn't seem to take effect. So I went on to click several colors and then save after each one and they don't seem to take effect. Any ideas?

FFD9FF is too light, you should see an error message when you try that one, the error message can be easily missed though, its at the top of the page, just before all the data fields.

Once you actually enter in a LEGAL color you should see a successful store message at the top of the page. If you clicked on of the colors and it's not saving those, then that's bad. I didn't actually test ALL of the them to make sure they were dark enough, some might actually be too light (in which case let me know and I'll remove them).

Sheesh, complain complain complain! Maybe CCCCCC is to light, I didn't check all the colors.

I think FF99CC is a good light pink, even my name looked good in it.
