Welcome to all the new members. We are getting
close to hitting 100!

I play Mancala against a
crab in a game called HodjPodj. It's an old software
title my kids play some. I am not much on the strategy
for Mancala, but I enjoy beating the animated
crab.

This is a pretty interesting time for Pente online
with the Oct Main #1 tournament wrapping up and the
PbEM tournament in its second leg. It seems we have an
increasing number of strong players out there.

I am
still tinkering with a new Pente puzzle to try to stump
y'all. Does anyone enjoy Pente puzzles? What's the best
way for me to show the puzzle once I get it
completed?

Scott

Ok, I'll call you ignorant... I am assuming by a pente puzzle he means a
situation with one player to win, just as a mate-in-x puzzle.

Yes, that's exactly what he means . . . but I don't think that makes anyone
ignorant.

Yes, we would love to see more puzzles from you,
Scott. Probably the easiest way to display it is to cut
a (new) pente board from a PBEM email and edit in
the pieces -- making sure the text is displayed as
uniform spacing. Then just mention whose turn it is to
win in how many moves and how many captures each.
I'll be glad to try it myself and to have my program
digest it to see if the solution is unique.

Ignorance
Posted: Mar 1, 2001, 8:03 AM

Thank you Aaron. Even though by definition
ignorant means 1. lacking knowledge, education, or
experience. 2. caused by or showing lack of education,
knowledge, etc. 3. uninformed (in), unaware (of). by the
Webster's New World Dictionary, (and truthfully I did apply
to all those areas in this matter) calling me
ignorant was not a nice thing to do. now I know that I
said call me dumb or ignorant... but I was
relatively certain that all of ya'll out there would have
enough sense and presence of mind to know that I am
neither dumb nor ignorant (and I know I don't know many
of you out there which is all the more reason not to
go calling strangers ignorant) about a great many
things and that when I said that it a statement to which
I expected no (nor really wanted any) comment on,
only on what a pente puzzle is.

Joe, you were
right, I do liven up the club! lol Later ya'll

P.S. His explanation was gibberish to me anyway. I am
a relatively new player and I have no idea what a
mate-in-x game is. Can someone please explain what a pente
puzzle is, and now, what a mate-in-x game is?

A pente puzzle or pente problem has the stones
already set up on the board in a particular position. The
arrangement of the stones does not have to arrive out of a
possible game situation. In each pente problem, white
moves first and your task is to find the one and only
way for White to win in the stipulated number of
moves, even against the most stubborn defense by Black.
E.G. Pente in four means you must find the way for
White to actually have five captures or five-in-a-row
by his fourth move. The number of captures that have
been taken are stated and often effect the
solution.

A Chess problem is the same deal, but instead of
saying Pente in four you would say mate in
four.

Ignorance is bliss...crayon art on caveman walls...mancala
in 3...

IGNORANCE
Posted: Mar 1, 2001, 12:48 PM

It seems to be a popular word as of late
I'm sorry but I thought the reason
we were all here was to learn. not to put people down because you assume your
more intelligent than them

I was joking (note the little smiley face at the
end of my message). I, for one, assumed minismurf and
risingsun were too. I guess I give people the benefit of
the doubt that way. In no way do I think someone is
unintelligent for not knowing what a Pente puzzle
is.

Sorry for any misunderstanding.

apology
Posted: Mar 2, 2001, 5:40 AM

first I would like to say to minisurf that I am
sorry I lost my temper momentarily and that I am sorry
that I that all of ya'll out there have to listen to
me. It was just that I had had all of being insulted
and put down that day that I could handle and I read
that post and it all reached a boiling point. So, I am
sorry for the disturbance I have caused here and I
apologize to you Minisurf. thank you scott for your
explaination of a pente puzzle, and thank you regan for
reminding us all that we are all here to learn, not bash
others.

I knew we could count on you to liven things up
here Risingsun! Glad your here!!!
I have some ideas
for a tournament at Dweebo's but know everyone will
have their own ideas of how to do it. My idea is a
series of 5- 2 game rounds (one of eack color)in each
match. First player to win both games in a round = wins.
After 5 matches and still no winer, it' a tie unless
both players wana keep going. Double elemanation, You
must loose 2 matches to be out of the tourney. Players
would have a week r 2 to meet and play their match.
There are a few more details about how to run it but
that's the main concept.
The question is, who wants
to run it?
Joe
