New way to play
Posted: Jul 8, 2004, 1:12 AM

Somehow i have had the wrong information (for years) on how to play pente. The way I play is nevertheless very challenging and fun. I am going to try the "accepted" method and see how it changes things for me. I would like you all to consider the way I (somehow) learned to play.

Here are the differences.

1. Only exactly 5 in a row. (always thought it was that way)
2. When a player gets 5 in a row the other player gets one more move, If it is a capture and is that players 5th capture, then they take the win.

Im not sure if there are game balance problems with this, but i wanted to offer it. I have had fun playing this way for several years.

Btw, I love the tournament rule of the first player having to go in the center, and having to play their second piece on the third intersection away from that one. It seems to balance early controll of the game.

Thanks,

I have an old pente set in a tube with a roll out mat,and have been playing since I was little. It was passed down to me and there is nothing in the rules about any of the rules you mentioned nor in the rule/strategy book I have that was published along time ago.The point of the game is to get 5 in a row.Why would you get another turn after someone has done so?

Yes, this is rules of ninuki-renju.
The second player has possibility to capture five by his last move (because he made one move less).
Yes, the aim is to create five in a row, but "perfect five" - five which can not be captured by next move of your opponent.
This is what was simplyfied by PENTE inventors and what is differ Pente and Ninuki-Renju (Japanese game)
