standard pente openings
Posted: Apr 29, 2004, 5:25 AM

I'm looking for some advice ... it seems to me that there must be standard openings in pente, (like when white moves three away from the original stone --- what's up with that?). Does anyone know of a source, print, online or otherwise, that talks about the first moves?

And/or is there anyone out there who would be willing to describe some opening in real time while we play?

I used to play a lot of pente, but always with the same person. As a consequence, I'm really uneven when I play other people, or even mm_ai.

Thanks!

search tye database, using names of top players. you'll start to notice they mostly use tye same moves.

If I do not accept a game invite right away, it means I will once I have fewer games in progress.

Perhaps you aren't familiar with the tournament rule, which requires the player one's second move be at least three positions away from his first move. It is intended to reduce player one's advantage.

If you want to play without the tournament rule on this site, you have to play unrated games.

Ahhh, that explains it. I didn't know about the tournament rule --- I just couldn't figure out why going that far away was a good move. Plus it explains why I couldn't make the move I wanted after I went to playing rated games. I thought it was the program being flaky. Thanks.

Thanks for the suggestion Dmitri --- I hadn't looked at the games history before, quite interesting in its own right. I looked at two games you played against Dweebo in round 3 of tournament 5A (you went first both times) and the first 8 moves were the same in both games. Is that typical? If so, those are pretty long opening sequences, in my opinion anyway.
