DSG Donation Drive
Posted: Jan 11, 2004, 9:18 PM

As you may have noticed already on the main page, DSG is having a donation drive right now. DSG's costs for the coming year is around $1,000, see below for a more detailed breakdown of costs.

The drive is off to an excellent start!! It started yesterday and already I've received 4 donations for a total of $235! We are almost 1/2 way to our goal of $1,000 already since I already had around $250 in the bank from earlier donations.

To entice players to donate I've added 2 new features for donors only. If you donate at least $5 you'll be able to upload a picture of yourself and a note to your profile for others to view. And of course you'll still be able to have your name in color within the game room! Also, one other cool change (cool to me anyways) is that now when you are in the game room, you can change the color of your name on the fly (changing it in your profile sends the new color to the game room). The same applies to notes and pictures as well. Expect more cool features for donors only in the future!

Detailed cost breakdown at DSG:
Most of the costs for the year come from the cost of leasing the server ($130 a month). Of that, I pay $30 a month because I use the server for some other small personal sites. Greg Strange (cicerlove) also hosts a few sites on the server and he is chipping in $20 a month. So $80/month * 12 months just about equals $1,000. There are other expenses of course for software licensing fees and domain costs, etc but those are minor compared to the server. The way things are going hopefully we'll get more than $1000 so we can add some more cool features in 2004.

Thanks again to all the players who've donated so far!! DSG wouldn't be here today if it wasn't for you.

Great Things Peter!!!

We are enjoying sharing our comical lil pics!! LOL

I have a question for you though:

Will the file size ever increase from 25k?
like if we were willing to donate more $$$$$ or something like that??? Or am I just asking too much?? lol

Are you just wanting larger size pictures (in terms of height and width) or do you actually have a picture that is 150x150 that is greater than 25k?

I honestly just pulled those contraints out of a hat to prevent people from uploading megabyte size pictures to their profiles. If you have a legitimate problem with those values I might be willing to tweak them.

I would have to say that 200 X 200 would suit me just fine! the 25 k is not a problem.

Wow!! Thanks to a bunch of generous donations DSG has already reached it's goal for the year of $1,000! I am really surprised and impressed that I received so much in just over 3 weeks, especially considering I didn't send out a notice, all I did was post the previous message and put up a little thermometer image on the web site.

I want to thank everyone who helped out, thanks to you the site will stay up in 2004.

If people still want to donate money in order to get the extra features have no fear, I will have a use for the money! There are a few things I would like to purchase for the site:
- SSL certificates to make the site more secure
- Certificates to code-sign the game room applet, that would allow it to do extra things on a player's computer, like save preferences and games, etc.
- A new computer, car, books, etc, starbucks....just kidding

Seriously though, I'll accept starbucks gift cards and stay up later working on the site...see I can justify it.
