Player Etiquette Redux

In addition to all the good things that joeking brought up about good gamesmanshihp in an earlier topic in this forum, it seems that we need to speak of common courtesy once again.

We all make mistakes in the course of playing Pente here. For instance, maybe we say something that was unintentionally offensive to someone. If that happens, whether you intended to harm someone or not, just be a big person about it and apologize. This is common courtesy and should be practiced by everyone.

But there are two specific things that should not be done here. Never, ever, ever start two games with two different people and then ignore one of the games. It is a waste of a player's time and it is rude. If you happen to do this, (shortstop) at least make an effort to apologize for your lack of manners. Doing so would go a long way toward repairing your reputation.

Secondly, don't boot someone from a table just because you don't like their opinion or because you think that you have some sort of total control over the content of the site (littlehum). Booting someone from a table should be the last resort, not the first one. Booting someone from a table should be used purely for the most disrespectful and egregious behaviour - not just because you wish someone would stop talking. We are members of a community and some healthy respect of each other is required if we are going to get along.

In the future, I would warn everyone to think about what they are doing to people here. As cliched as it sounds, do to others what you would have done to you. It's a simple rule that almost always ensures that people are at their most respectful. No one can outline everything you shouldn't do to avoid harming someone but think about this: If you piss everyone off here, you will be hard-pressed to find a real-time Pente site with such a great crowd of people. You control your own destiny. If you are careless with your reputation, no one will play you.

I agree with cicerolove on this one. My experience has shown me that any attempt to dictate sportsmanship, no matter how valid it is, will be met with opposition, so people will probably be writing in with angry, irrational nonsensical replies, but hey, maybe things will change. Anytihng is possible.

If I do not accept a game invite right away, it means I will once I have fewer games in progress.

I agree also and would add another note- try to be especially patient and courteous to new players of the game or those new to this site. That is a major factor in how this site (and pente) will grow. Even if someone is uninterested in teaching a newbie, giving them references to how to find out about strategy(for instance) can go a long way towards building our community. Tom

Retired from TB Pente, but still playing live games & exploring variants like D, poof and boat
