Fragmentation of Pente Discussion
Posted: Jun 5, 2003, 11:49 PM

Hi,

I just noticed that quite a bit of discussion on Pente has been posted at the Brain King site, including a thread on a variant called Poof, which was mentioned, but not described, here and some sort of discussion about draws, which I didn't think was possible in Pente.

I also just noticed that a some people are trying to start up some sort of player's organization, which has a seperate board for discussion here at DSG.

I'm a little concerned that the Pente-playing community may be too small to have general discussions about the game spread across several different boards.

Does anyone else see a potential problem with the community becoming fragmented while it is still this small?

Is the Yahoo group still running and might that not be a more central forum for the discussion of the game, in general?

Just an idea.

Hi Walt,
You have a good point, I think. The problem with Yahoo is all of the pop-ups and other irritating things which Yahoo does (like making the default setting that they send you spam which you have to opt out of). Computer difficulties have made it challenging for me to log in at this site, and so when I heard about Brainking I started discussing these things there and then after those discussions had been up and running, I got back on this site and posted here to include people who may not have been aware of the Brainking happenings. I didn't really feel it would be appropriate to post all of the threads involved in those discussions here, so I tried to just limit it to a link. Not entirely satisfactory, but that's how life is sometimes, I guess. I do agree that one centralized agreed on discussion board for all things pente would be wonderful, but so far it seems like the best we can do at the moment is to provide links to connect the different forums. Walt,

Aaron and I, after recommendations from many people, decided to allow this DSG forum to be the central Pente forum, rather than the Yahoo site. The Yahoo site is still "active" but is used little.

If good discussions pop up on other forums such as brainking, it would be a good idea to post some kind of summary here too.
Yes, this Forum here has several boards divided by general topics, so its up to you to check each board here that may interest you.

Hello all,

I haven't had time to log on to any of these sites as much as I would have liked, but I would like to reiterate Mark's endorsement of DSG, keeping in mind I have never been to BrainKing. I have one suggestion, though: experienced players need to keep visiting the Yahoo site periodically because it is Yahoo, after all, and its traffic is more mainstream, which means new players may be just as likely to latch on there as anywhere. We need to keep checking up on the site to tell anyone who may have joined there that they should not take lack of activity on that site as a sign of a dead game, letting them know about DSG, IYT, and the others.

Aaron
