I'm pretty new to brainking and have not bothered to learn the exact rules there. The only place I see mention of these types of rules is in the very small link at the bottom of the main page called "User Agreement". Besides some rules about not allowing multiple accounts, not allowing other people to use your account and lots of rules about posting messages in the forums, there is this statement:
"NO CHEATING. This includes using outside programs to help play and losing on purpose for the goal of boosting ratings. Your account may be banned, and ratings will be removed."
There is no specific mention about databases, notes, opening books or lots of other helpful resources, but some people have interpreted this rule to mean no outside resources of any kind. Perhaps some brainking fanatics out there can add to this thought better than I can. Either way, the rule, the intent, and the visibility are not clear at brainking in my opinion and it seems that most players there generally accept outside resources as part of the game.
nosovs, every time you talk about this topic, it seems like you undermine yourself. In my opinion, in pente moves 3 - 5 are the most important and require the most skill and deepest knowledge and understanding of the game. In expert level games, after move 5 the game is often already decided. It is pretty disappointing for me to hear that you will always use the database during this portion of the game and that you refuse to play if you cannot do so. Someone considered an expert in this game should not require this and I'm starting to feel that your rating here is vastly over inflated. If you ever want to progress to the next level of this game, you should start trying to play this portion of the game without any outside resources. The process of thinking these moves through and studying why you are making certain moves in the early stages, based on understanding and not based on statistics, is what makes an expert player. You are a very good player and I hope you will continue to play at DSG to develop this part of your game, which will make you fully prepared for live over-the-board tournaments in the future.

Dear up2ung Probably you don't understand me . I don't mind about rating at all, (it is not important for me). I don't plan to improve my skils in Pente to play face-in - face Tournament. It is not in my plans at all. Nothing for fight in Pente. I am Renju player it is amouter Federation but you can find more then 300-400 Dan players there and more then 15 countries with Real World Championship. I can not accept that 14-20 players without any selection which decleared that this is World championship. World Championship players are only winners of national Championships, playing in common Qualification and then playing seriouse round-robin tournament for 10 players. I play Pente for fan only. I like to play interesting games where I need to think how to play, deep analizing. I don't consider game when my oponent just play wrong or mistakes as satisfactions. I don't enjoi such kind of games. So, I just not interesting to play it. There is no seriose resons to learn all database variants to play Pente in face to face tournaments. So, the most common place in future to play Pente will be Internet, you can not control your opponent use database or not, because DSG base can be sucsessfully substituted your own base made with the help of Stepanov database. So, those players who belive that Pente as a game is so attractive that USA championship can united 50 players in future can play DSG style, but other players who don't belive that, and think that Pente will spred only as Internet game need not to play DSG style , because they never use this skils in future. I just have my opinion and say it. You can have your opinion, no problem....

Ok, these are good points. I guess some players just prefer a different style of play. I enjoy the process of thinking through each move during a game -- other players enjoy a different type of analysis.
I still think you will find value by playing the DSG style. It's a different way of thinking. It's like approaching an old problem with a new perspective -- it might improve your overall game. Conversely, I had avoided turn-based sites for a long time, but I have started playing them to find a new way of thinking that you cannot get from real time games. Plus, you will have fun here if you play and you can discuss game moves with other players in real time (group analysis). But, it is up to you. Perhaps I will see you at brainking.

Dear all, I find this a most unworthy topic..For one if an individual has to cheat (and perhaps he/she may not deem it so)is a moot point ,this game is to be played on the up and up(no pun intended) so be it... No outside help or inside help/cause if you need it and are proven guilty what claim do you have to be the best......HHmm actually none..!!! I play mearly on instict and my opponets moves,nothing else~~~ for the data base to determine your game is like scrabble or chess searches(comp cheat mode) for the best advance...THAT is cheating..So be it if you seem its fair but it is not...I can whip peeps right and left with the searches but its better to expand my own mind than help from others or searching for a win.. I have played many of these peeps over the board with nothing but us and its fun..Maybe try it.. .........................Mick/Eric

You don't understand. Nobody don't use database to win the game. Database is use to make novelty for your opponent, which will play new variant instead of using database. If you use database , you can think that your opponent also use it, so you make move which is not in database to make situation new for both you and your opponent. That is this style.

Some more info... I think that is also different style of game. If you know your opponent , if you say we will play at 7 PM like you did at the Tournament you can do all options with database before your round. But I play all players who was asking to play. I don't know about their openning nothing exept richard. I never say , lets play later, so I just need some information about opponents. When you play first - you not need this, but if you want to win as second player you need to make novelty for your opponent.
