I have negletced to check this discussion board very often... today I looked over some past messages, as I had some time to spare. I have a few questions...
What is the boston defense or boston opening?
What were the results for the 20th anniversary pente tournament?
WHat is the address for oleg stepanov's database?
why do so many people enter the pente tournaments at IYT, but not the pro-pente tournaments??
I am interested in the IYT filter, is this stil available and does it work well?
I thought I saw someone mention something about playing against the computer at DSG.. is this possible?
Thanks in advance to all who reply!

<opening?>>
The Boston Opening was used frequently at the 1983 World Championship Tournament, which was held in Boston. It doesn't seem to work very well. You can see an example of it at ...
Bodo Konze, a Bridge player from Austin, Texas won the tournament. He beat a couple of former world champions. Unfortunately, he doesn't seem to play Pente on the Internet.
<stepanov's database?>>
It's a DOS program. (But he also has a beta-test version out for Windows.) You can download it from ...

Thanks for the info. I do remember the Botson defense being used recently in tourney games at IYT, and I did think it was defunct. But I remember gary barnes recently saying that it was very much alive as evidenced by the 2000 PBeM cmampionship round.. I wonder what thta is all about....

Dm, I have a partial answer to one question. The pro boards at IYT are not webtv friendly for some reason? Lots of webtv players at IYT! And maybe the word pro scares some beginers away? Joe

My husband and I have enjoyed playing Pente for many years. I actually think he subscribed to this list, but I thought I might give you some insight as to why some people may avoid Pro-Pente.
After playing standard Pente on the skin for several years we were both very happy to see IYT! We were sick of playing each other and having actual people to play was exciting. I had never seen Pro-Pente or Keryo-Pente before and I wanted to try them.
My conclusion was that Pro-Pente did not have anything more to offer me other than the restrictions.
Keryo was very different and I ended up loving it. I still greatly enjoy playing Pente, but the same boring feeling surfaces when Pro-Pente is mentioned.
I love the fact that you have organized live tourneys and share your ideas on this list! I hope that at some point a standard Pente and/or Keryo-Pente tourneys will be available in the TX/OK area. I know both my husband and me would be very interested.

Well, my theory on why more women don't play pente is because we're off fixing dinner for you bum men and husbands while ya'll hog the computer lol. just kidding. In all seriousness, I really don't think we women get as much from games as men do. Think about it though. I know a thirty-something year old man who got a X-box for himself! not his kids! lol. I don't know about the rest of you but I have trouble sometimes prying my boyfriend away from his playstation or computer. anyhow, that's my theory...that guys are just more attached to games than women are.
Also, devonian, they are having a pente tourney in June of this year in Fort Worth. Look back to message #609 for info. You'll have to talk to Regan though because I don't know if it's too late to sign up or not.
happy games everybody
