P2's good chances with current rules
Posted: Dec 6, 2001, 3:48 AM

Hey all -

I haven't written a note on here
in a long time, so I thought I'd bring up a couple
of things that haven't been mentioned here in a
while.

Has anyone observed the games from the 2000-01 PBEM
tourney final? I have seen very little on here about the
completion of that tourney. Unfortunately, 3 of the 7
players decided that they did not have time to play their
games (shame on them!), so we basically wound up with a
4 player final, although one of the one's who
forfeited did complete 2 games.

Here's the plug for
player 2 (P2) with current rules. In completed games
that were not forfeited in that final, P2 currently
has a 6-5 record!! [There are 2 games remaining
between Dmitri Krasnonosov (Student) and myself.] One of
the most notable things about this is that P2 scored
3-1 using one of the standard Boston defences, but it
was a different line than was used in last year's
final. This turned out to be a good one.

For
those of you who think that the Boston defense and P2
is dead in E-mail play, perhaps you should
reconsider your thinking. The reason that P2 did so poorly
in the 1999-2000 final is that the exact same line
was played in many of the games. It just so happens
that it was a bad line for P2, so it appeared that P2
was dead. I hope that the results from this years
final have proven otherwise.

I must admit that I
have come full circle on this issue. When I first
started playing Pro Pente tourneys at IYT, I was
convinced that P2 would at least continue to win 35-40% at
high-level E-mail play for at least the next 3-4 years. When
I did some research on the 1999-2000 finals games
and analysis of my own, I was becoming convinced that
P2 was dead and would probably only win 10-20% and
that that percentage would continue to dwindle if
rules weren't changed. Now I am back to my original
thinking.

The key is to not always look at those databases for
good moves in E-mail play. I believe that that is why
the Russians are so good. They have a knack for
coming up with new and excellent lines that have been
played very little before. Sometimes you have to come up
with something new on your own.

In speaking
with Mark Mammel, I have found out that the rules will
NOT be changed for the 2001-02 PBEM tourney final. He
had mentioned possibly doing that in the past. He
said that it was as a result of how well P2 had done
in this year's final. Initially I was disappointed,
but actually I am now glad. There is still a lot of
theory yet to be developed for P2 with current
rules.

Barykin miss Internet on two
month... Sinyov lose games on renju too (he is very strong
renu player). Play on Russia by internet are very
expensive. And some time are difficult.

Timeouts in 2000-01 PBEM final
Posted: Dec 11, 2001, 3:09 AM

To all -

In response to Oleg's explanation
about the timeouts of Victor Barykin and Igor Sinyov in
the 2000-01 PBEM Pente final, my apologizies to those
individuals for perhaps implying that they were 'too busy' to
play their games. I intenionally did not mention any
specific names in that note because I wasn't completely
aware of the circumstances. I also was certainly NOT
aware of the difficulty and expense in using the
internet in Russia so the 'shame on them' comment was
probably out of line.

It is my hope that in the
future the expense becomes less and that usage becomes
much easier in Russia so that we can have many great
finals matches in the future!

Sorry. If you think I understand English so good
- you not right. I understand only you told
about peoples who can not play at final. And I give you
that information. Barykin my friend. I made he
play pente. I ask him - give me password and when I
see you did not do moves on 20 days - I will play.
But it was too late.

Truth much worse. On
renju we have Poduga - place where 5-15 World Champions
on renju. There are childrens. They play on PBeM
but... All moves do one lady Irina Metrevelly - teacher
(only one computer and only one Internet). Every summer
all goes to Summer Camp where there are no
Internet... 3 month... Probably next 15-20 years nothing
change on Poduga.
