Hi everyone, I've enjoyed reading the bios of the top players. I'm not a top player, but I've been beaten by alot of the top players - does that count? Anyway, here's my bio: Name: Jeff Charleston; location: Chicago; Age: 31; no kids yet, but first one is due TODAY (Jan 23) so should be here very soon. Have been playing at IYT for maybe a year very casually; within the past 3-4 months have tried to improve my play by studying past games. Although with the baby coming that all goes out the window I read that one of the members here is from Pensacola, Florida - I graduated from Pensacola Christian College ('91). Job: I'm a controller at a local community college (and earned my CPA also); OK, enough rambling!

Jeff, I grew up in Pensacola, FL and graduated from the University of West Florida in 1991. Work just down the road from PCC. I moved around some after graduating, but figured it was time to get the family (wife, 2 boys (5,8), cat and 3 gold fish) back to the beautiful white sand beaches of the Gulf Coast (like most native Floridians, I go to the beach maybe once a year).
My first Pente tournament was in 1981 or 1982 when I was 13 or 14. My older brother Bill beat me out in the Pensacola tournament and qualified for the 1982 World Pente tournament (I guess the World back then only consisted of Oklahoma, Texas, Florida and Minnesota). We both had only been playing a few months, but he went on to finish 2nd behind John Krenz.
Encouraged by Bill's strong showing, we started playing seriously that year in preparation for the 1983 tournament. I came in 2nd to my Brother in the Atlanta qualifying tournament and then came in 2nd to Bill Webber in the Tampa tournament. I seem to come in 2nd quite often. Anyway, Bill competed in the 1983 tournament in Boston and was nice enough to let me come along.
When I finally started to get really good, the game died. The last tournament I played in before coming in 2nd (that blasted Berger Coefficient %^)) in Mark's first pbem tournament was the only one I have won. It was the 1984 U.S. Open tournament held in Dallas. I surprised Tesh 2-0 and beat David Comberrel 2-0 and my brother 2-0 and split with Dan Allen and Peter Hudson. Braunlich also played in that tournament but we did not get to play each other. I recall ending up with a 10-2 score beating on tie breaks Tesh who also had a 10-2 score. No newsletters came out after that tournament and Parker Brothers let the game die out.
After that I stopped playing until the last couple of years. I composed a few Pente puzzles that were published in the old Pente newsletters and am dabbling with one that I hope to unveil here. I play racquetball to try to stay (get) in shape. I enjoy card games.
Oh well, I ramble too much, but figured I needed to write up my bio since I kind of asked for everyone else's.
