I ran across the following topic with a google search just now: http://mathematica.stackexchange.com/questions/46631/detecting-patterns-of-black-and-white-stones-on-a-2d-board - the author, Victor K. is writing a Pente program (or was 3 months ago). It will be interesting to find out what he comes up with.
