Feature Suggestions for ITY
Posted: Oct 3, 2000, 7:15 PM

I thought I'd share some suggestions I sent ITY
about a week ago. The first few have to do with Go, but
then I get into ranking, tournaments, & pente

------

I've been playing on IYT for about 6 weeks now and
have a few
suggestions. I know features are easier
said then done , but here are
the ideas
anyway:

- Start having Go tournaments

- When
challenging someone to Go, allow the challenger to set the
stone
handicap.

- Offer different size boards for Go: 9x9 and 15x15
are fairly standard
alternative board
sizes

- Calculate Rankings: given what your core business
is, it seems strange that you don't do rankings other
than voluntary & self-reported
by players. BTW,
Gary Barnes is generously devoting hist time
calculating rankings for Pro-Pente players (such as myself)
to use

- Winning a tournament: I think
tournament winners should get something for having won a
tournament. Perhaps you give winners a little symbol (like
the one's you give players who click ads) for each
tournament won.

- Pente game history: there is no way
to see at a glance or print out a pente game
histories. The players must step through each turn in
order
to see the move that happened. It would be _VERY_
nice if you could display the moves in cartesian
coordinates rather than B W (which gives no information).

Is it possible to add to IYT postal servis.
It
is very convinient if you receive your game to your
e-mail box and can make moves just sending e-mail
instead waiting when picture will download your boar - to
see which move have made your opponents.
Here in
Russia Internet is rather expensive and it is better if
you can make moves for one minute instead 10-15
minutes.
Best Regards Alexander Nosovsky

Please note Nosovs open letter. As our friend
Gary B. says, the fun is in the study of the game. So
it requires twice as long as Nosovs says. Once to
get the move and once to send the move.

The
ultimate feature would be the multiple function.

IYT would not then be a repeat of Richard's. You
would have to visit the site (and read the ads) at
least once.

IYT would never agree to an e-mail function
because, while they are a free site to us, they, unlike
Richard's, are a for-profit site. The action they get on
their banner ads is their only income; thus, they would
not agree to a function that allows you to play the
games without being exposed to the ads. Maybe they
would add the feature if they were able to put banner
ads on the e-mail notifications, but even that would
not be nearly the exposure level they get now. I
would think that that option would not sit well with
IYT or their sponsors. I mean, someone can ask if
they want, but I doubt that would ever come to
be.

By the way, Mr. Nosovsky, welcome to the club! I
have long hoped that the top European and Russian
players would start finding their way here.
