open 3 and 4 warnings

One of the requests that I get alot is some automatic warning when an opponent has an open 3 or 4. This would be a pretty cool feature. I want to get everyones opinion on the idea.
I know that personally, after playing regularly for a few months, I very rarely miss an open 3 or 4. Its my feeling that most advanced players are this way. But this would be a good feature for beginners who can't see everything on the board yet.
There are different ways players could be alerted. There could be a simple text message maybe at the bottom of the board that gives a warning. Or more advanced would be highlighting the pieces in the 3/4 somehow.
My only real concern is should this be an option that either player can choose to use (so 1 player could not play with warnings, and the other player could), or should it be required that if 1 player uses warnings, the other player must also (to keep things fair?)
I personally would like to have it as an option for each player individually, probably under the Game Options button. I don't think it really is an advantage if one player has warnings. After all, no one likes to win because the other player misses an easy block.
Let me know what you think. If I do decide to add a feature like this, it will not go into version 3. But probably 3.1 or something like that.

I Agree!

I like the idea of having an option of alerting of an open three or a four. Also it would be nice to be alerted to a split-4 or a split-5, since they're just as important to watch for...

That warning would be a great option! Some players may not feel they need a warning for open 3s or potential 5s, but I am sure not one of them! I have seen almost everyone miss a few! I miss more than most! As long as everyone knew the had the warning option available, then it should be alright to make it an individual option. Could there be a way to set 'game options' and have them stay set for return visits. I have often thought that there might need to be some rules of etiquette established at Dweebo's. Any ideas????????????????????

Dweebo,
I also like the option of being alerted upon an open three. I think it would be great for those learning the game especially when playing more experience players. I don't mention an open 3 because I don't know if the other player needs me too.

I have read through the messages and thus know that I'm in the minority here, but I think that a warning option should be available only to both players or neither and only if both players know it is on. Easy blocks are part of the game, and giving beginners a warning system that will do that part of the game for them is doing them a disservice. In my mind, it's not about people benefitting from others missing easy blocks; it's about people learning that part of the game on their own. Moreover, if are looking for real-time internet pente to stay as close to over-the-board as possible, the warning system is a step backward, for although the pente instruction book says that it is common etiquette to declare a three or four when you're making one, I've never seen it happen in practice. Anyway, that's my two cents.

This is how we play over the board for money in Texas; You must advise of missed open 3s and potential 5s. You only advise after your opponent has moved. I like playing that way. I get to thinking so hard about the game that I sometimes miss open 3s and potential 5s. I have seen most top players do the same thing at Dweebo's from time to time. I have always advised. I dont care to win by an overlooked open 3 or potential 5. The game also goes faster with the advise rule. If the warning option at Dweebo's was know by all, and some players choose not to use it, that seams ok.

I agree with you to some extent Aaron, which is why I haven't yet decided to implement this. I think that it is possible that if beginners are always warned about 3/4's they might not develop the ability to see them for themselves.
Thanks to everyone who has responded!
