Need for speed!

Now that the debate over which is best, real time pente or e mail pente has been settled, once and for all time, something new has become the rage at pente.org; SPEED PENTE! For all you e mail players who have been hovering over the same move for hours, trying to figure out if it is the right one, take a break, have a little fun! In speed pente each player has 5 min. total to make all his moves. No time to think, you must react with your basic pente instincts! Great fun! We have been playing it unrated and just for the fun of it, but who knows, it could catch on and have its own ratings page someday? joeking2020

I don't know about a separate rating for speed pente, but maybe. One thing that will make speed pente a bit better is incremental time. In version 3, you can set the timer to add time to your clock after you move. So you could play a game of speed pente with a timer of 1/5. This would give you 1 minute initially and 5 extra seconds after each move. This gives you a chance to hang on when you only have a few seconds left.

The incremental time sounds fun. I played Joe in a 2 min game once and he killed me as I panicked and made stupid moves For another fun variant, I played Joe and I set both colors to the SAME COLOR. I had to remember which pieces were which. I did OK remembering, I only forgot one piece for a few moves...but I had a hard time seeing where to make a GOOD move, I lost of course...
Any other fun varieties? Anyone ever play Repensi (I tried it, it looked ridiculous) or Atomic Bomb?

I think this is a very useful feature. When I play chess at Yahoo Games I usually set up a table with 5/15.
The only problem with Yaho is that, depending of your connection speed, you loose up to 10 seconds for each move (because of the time it takes to transmit your move).
Do you know if the same problem happens at Pente.Org?

this is a good point, network lag can really screw things up.
however, at pente.org the timers are updated on your local computer, and when you make a move, the time you had when you dropped the piece is sent with the move to the other player. then when the other player receives the move, his/her clock is updated with the time received. so you might sometimes notice your opponents timer backs up a few seconds when you receive a move
hopefully this will ensure that no time is lost and that both players have synchronized clocks. in previous versions this wasn't the case.
